| SAFETY and SECURITY Alcoholism and substance abuse by indigenous youth in our city's parks and malls has reached epidemic proportion and has driven many good people out of town. I believe that a solution to this would be achieved by providing a hall in a park to develop as a facility that they can call their own and administer themselves with pride. I will work with the aboriginal elders and community to achieve this. The Streets of Fremantle are becoming a virtual ghetto where armed intimidating gangs rule. For much of the past 2 decades I serviced (and fed) the people of Fremantle 24/7 and on thousands of mornings I had breakfast with the city's garbos discussing the carnage of burnt out rubbish bins, broken shop windows and beer bottles left in town from the previous night's reveling. I will work with the City Council and the regional Police to create and enact strategies that make our streets safe to walk DAY and NIGHT. In 1994 I was nominated by the Fremantle City Council for a 'Year of the Family' award for a project that was successful in bridging the gap between the police and the local adolescents who are now known as street hoons. We held a Motorkhana event on Victoria Quay behind Captain Munchies with support of Fremantle Community Police and CAMS. This allowed the young drivers to test their driving skills in a race against the clock under police supervision and scrutiny. I will work to recreate this to be a regular event. I will also work to resume the "Safer WA" model as a means of providing community feedback on policing and law and order issues. |
