Precious Home Adoption &
Visitations
Precious Home, which is
affiliated to the Gospel of Salvation Mission Society in Jalan Chow Kit, serves
as a halfway house and temporary shelter for children who have been abandoned by
their parents, many of whom are drug users living in the Chow Kit area. It is
located in Jalan Carey, Petaling Jaya, right across the Old Klang Road.
It was officially adopted by Leo Club of KL Perennial since July 2003 and
monthly visitations and activities have been scheduled to be carried out by
different small groups of Leos from the club, each consists of 3 – 4 members.
For the new fiscal year of 2004-2005, monthly visitations and activities has
been rescheduled into a bi-monthly basis in order to accommodate the Leos who
are tied up with other commitments for instance studies, work and etc.

First visitation to the Precious Home in the new
fiscal year started from the month of July, headed by incoming President Leo
Chua Yee Kuan, together with other 3 members. As when the Leos arrived there in
the late afternoon, the kids were in the middle of cleaning up the home, the
Leos immediately started helping out the kids to do some basic cleaning in the
home to make the home a better place for the kids to stay.
After a round of cleanings, the Leos then had some games with kids, including
musical chairs, singing and so on. As when the singing session started, the kids
really enjoyed and started performing their talent, by singing and dancing in
the hall. Some of them were really performer, presented some stunning
performances which even the Leos couldn’t do it.
The Leos also bought some food including some snacks as well as some dinner sets
for the kids but unfortunately the food prepared was not really sufficient. As a
result of it, some of the older kids forced to share the food with the younger
ones.
The Leos had a wonderful time with the kids until about 7.30 PM in the night and
took their leave.

The second visitation in the fiscal year, organized
and headed by Community Service Director Leo Goh Kok How. As when the we arrived
there in the evening, we were greeted by the new home care-taker, as well as
Auntie Betty, the volunteer helper who has been helping out in Precious Home
everyday.
This time we brought the kids some finger food together with some package/soft
drinks to be given to all of them. They were overjoyed about as they rarely have
the opportunity to have junk food in the home. We then started chit chatting and
playing around with the kids, we noticed there were some new kids in the home
and invited them to introduce themselves. The caretaker of the home also briefly
told us how some of the new kids got into the home, she also told us that the
kids were recently learning to make some greeting cards which we can help to
sell out later on as our club project.
After a round of interactions and games, the kids volunteered to perform some
break dance to us which they previously performed in Dynasty Hotel during one of
the Christmas event. We were truly amazed on what they can do and how talented
they actually were.
We made our move shortly after that at about 6.30 PM. The kids couldn’t bear to
leave us and we promised to visit them again by the end of the year for
Caroling.

The third visitation in the fiscal year was
organized with the main objective to donate 17 brand new school bags, 18 sets of
new clothes as Christmas presents, toys and some old books to be donated to the
kids in conjunction with the Christmas and New Year.
The project started at 3.00pm. We started off by giving out the presents to the
kids. All the kids were asked to introduce themselves to us by telling their
names, age and school. A nicely wrapped Christmas gift (consists of a set of new
clothes) was then presented by President Leo Chua Yee Kuan to every single one
of them.
After that Lion Elaine Tan also presented the new school bags to all the kids in
the home. She also gave them a marker pen and taught them how to write their
names on the school bags. The old books were also donated officially to the home
by our club and received by the caretaker Ms Mary.
The project ended at around 5.00pm. We hope that by having this project, this
year’s Christmas Day will be more meaningful and a merrier one for them.

The The forth visitation in the fiscal year was
organized with the 3 different programs, a game session, a Chinese New Year
celebration and an academic revision session with the objective to bring joy and
cheer to the kids in conjunction with the festival but also not forgetting the
importance of studies. Especially while most of the kids there have just entered
a new grade in school and might be having problem adapting to the new level of
studies.
The project kicked off at 2.00pm. We started by an introductory session from all
the kids to break the ice. All the kids were asked to introduce themselves to us
by telling their names, age, school as well as their hobbies. Each of them was
also given a blank piece of paper to design their own name tag and wore them
throughout the day so that it will be easier for the Leos to identify them later
on.
Leo Chong Poh-E then began the games session. Many different types of games were
conducted throughout the session such as Do-And-Follow game (where the kid that
fails to follow the same action everybody does gets punished), Act-And-Guess
game (one kid acting a particular action to be guessed by the rest of the kids)
as well as the Musical Chair game (the kid that fails to grab a chair when the
music stops gets punished). The winning kids were given various types of snacks
as reward while the losing kids were given punishment to have their faces
sticked with stickers. The kids really had a wonderful and enjoyable time
running, playing around with each other under the Leo’s conduct especially
during the Musical Chair game.

The second session was the Chinese New year
celebration, although not all the kids there were Chinese, but they still joined
in and celebrated together. Leo Madeline Yap spent half an hour sharing with
them some traditional stories related to the Chinese New Year, and taught them
to sing some Chinese New Year songs and danced accordingly. Meanwhile, the Leos
also distributed bagful of Chinese New Year cookies, drinks, snacks and candies
to all the participated kids.

After having a whole afternoon of fun, the kids
were given tuition on their studies in the final session. They were separated
into 2 different groups, the elder kids and the younger ones. Leo Goh Kok How
and Leo Chua Yee Kuan were helping the elder kids to revise their studies based
on their textbooks in the schools and gave them different exercises at the same
time while explaining to them. On the other hand, Leo Chong Poh-E, Leo Hooi
E-Von & Leo Madeline Yap were using a different interactive method to teach the
younger kids in getting to know new words, mathematics and other general
knowledge.

The project ended at around 5.00pm. Before we left,
we gave each of the kid a small paper-made souvenir, requesting them to keep the
souvenirs until our next visitation in the month of April. This was also another
lesson to help them learning a sense of belongings which will be really helpful
in their personality development.

We believed the visitation this time has been a
really meaningful one as we not only focused on playing and spending time with
them but also assisted them in their studies. However, we actually discovered
that the kids there were really in need of assistances from the outsiders on
their academic work as there are no appropriate people in the home to help them.
As a result of it, we are thinking of starting a more regular visit to them in
the time to come to further facilitate them on their studies.

This Christmas Caroling was a joint project between
the Leo Clubs of KL Perennial and KL Unity for the second year. The purpose of
the project was to increase inter-club relationship between 2 clubs as well as
spreading and bringing the joy of Christmas to the public. The response by both
the clubs was overwhelming.
Instead of the caroling from home to home that we did last year, this year we
were actually putting up a caroling performance on the main stage of One Utama
Shopping Complex which lasted for 30 minutes.
Practices were held two times during the weekdays prior to the actual event day
at both clubs’ Leo members' residences. The final practice was then held on the
19th December morning just right before the event. We immediately adjourned to
the One Utama Shopping Complex after the practice and arrived at about 3.00 pm.
We then spent sometime preparing, putting up club banner, as well as doing last
minute arrangement for the caroling performance.
At about 3.30 pm sharp, the floor deejay announced both our club names and the
caroling performance we will be presenting next. Then we were invited up on the
stage. The male members were at the back row while the female members were at
the front, together with the guitarist who will be playing the background music
for us.
All of us did our very best performing the following carols on the stage :-
1) Jingle Bells
2) Silent Night
3) Joy to the World
4) White Christmas
5) Frosty the Snowman
6) O Come O Ye Faithful
7) Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer
8) We wish you a Merry Christmas
The caroling went on very well, except the technical problem on the microphones
and a short moment when we sang out of beat due to the lack of practice.
However, we were still very pleased with our overall performance, as we
understood that our main objective of the project was to spread the joy to the
shoppers in the complex than to put up a professional show. And we truly
believed that we have successfully achieved that because throughout the half an
hour performance, there were more than 100 over people that gathered themselves
around the stage to watch our caroling, and some of them even joined us
clapping, singing or even dancing at the same time when we caroled.
This is definitely one of the very meaningful projects during the festive
season. Not only we appreciated the spirit of Christmas but at the same time we
actually helped spreading the joy to the community around us.
