RUSSIAN CELLO MUSIC.
There are litterally hundreds of compsers who lived and worked in Russia around the turn of the century and in the USSR after 1919. Most of them are completely unknown. Some unfortunately deserve this fate, but many contributed to the incredibly rich musical life of that wonderful country and do not deserve to be neglected.

There are literally hundereds of pieces of music written for the cello which originate from Russia from the late 1800's to the present day. Here I will do my best to provide a comprehensive list of what has been written. Getting hold of the music can often be difficult - the British Library have been an enormous help to me, and despite my best efforts, there will be gaps in this list. So, if you can help me out, please e-mail me to update me!

The Lists
After much deliberation, I have decided to organise these lists alphabetically. I contemplated classifying by type (i.e. sonata/concerto) and by style (i.e. romantic/avant-garde), but concluded that the best way was A-Z. I will try to include a little about each composer (or maybe each piece....) to give you an idea of what to expect. Please remeber though, that I haven't heard a lot of these pieces, let alone played them. I also hope to include details of publishers at a later date.

Later on, I hope to include similar lists for Violin, Viola and Bass.
The best places to get CDs of Russian music from are TOWER RECORDS and OLYMPIA. Tower Records has many sound clips you can listen to to get an idea of what a piece is like.
