| Alexander GLAZUNOV: 1865-1936 A very prolific composer and teacher (of Shostakovich.) Writes in an extremely conservative manner. Definately worth getting to know his music though. The Fourth and Fifth Symphonies are my favorites. |

| Sofia GUBAIDULINA: b1931 A highly original composer of incredible music inspired by her strong religeous beliefs. Her music wasn't heard until relatively recently because of the trouble it would have caused for her with the soviet authorities. Associated with Denisov and Schnittke as one of the big three of Contemporary Soviet music of the late 20th century. Athought some pieces are very long, they are frequently intenesly beautiful . Other recomendations are, "Pro et Contra," for large orchestra and her Violin Concerto, "Offertorium." Several of the works listed here have been recorded. |
