Dmitri KABALEVSKY: 1904-1987 Mostly extremely conservative in style. Kabalevsky is a much underated composer in my opinion. His Second Cello Concerto is strongly recommended. He did (deservedly sometimes) earn a reputation as a Soviet lackey, but his music is well worth getting to know. The Violin Concerto also comes highly recommended

Giya KANCHELI: b1935 Fantastic music. His earlier works can sound a little naive, but his later "titled" works are brilliant. He alternates moments of beautiful calm with violent explosions of sound. Often writes using fairly conservative harmonies. "Abii ne Viderem," is in my opinion on of his best works, though unfortunately I haven't heard, "Simi" yet

Aram KHACHATURIAN: 1906-1978 I shouldn't need to say anything here! However, if you don't know anything by Khachaturian, start with the "Spartacus," and "Gayeneh," ballet suites and the Violin Concerto. He writes in a very conservative folk influenced manner. His music is full of beautiful melodies and energy, The Cello Concerto is know as his most "modern" utterance. Don't let this put you off though, as he didn't get very far so far as the "modern" bit is concerned. A great piece of music though

Karen KHACHATURIAN: b1920 Although not avant-garde, his music is much less tonal than the above Khachaturian. The cello sonata is available on CD (Russian Revalation)
Sonata for Cello and Piano Concerto for Cello and Orchestra
1966 1983
Tikhon KHRENNIKOV: b1913 Both these concertos are now deleted. So far as I'm aware, he writes in a tonal, attractive manner. If I'm wrong, please e-mail me!

Julian KREIN: 1913-1996 The little I have heard is beautiful music perhaps a little influenced by Debussy. The major influence is Jewish culture; Krein was a member of the Jewish school of composers.

Lev KNIPPER: 1898-1974 Fairly tonal music. Some very interesting pieces. The concerto-monologue is recorded and can be heard on the Tower Records website. He is one of the many composers who started off exploring avant-garde ideas (in the 20's) and was "persuaded" otehrwise by the Soviet authorities

Perpetuum Mobile for Cello and Piano Rhythmus-Arhythmus for Cello and Piano
1980 1993
Georg KIRKOR: 1910-1980 An early work listed here - the style is simple and melodic. Apparently tho, his later works were influenced by the western avant-garde.
