Alfred SCHNITTKE: 1934-1998 One of the big three of the late 20th century Russian avant-garde. He has experimanted with many different styles, including Polystylistics and Serialism. His works for cello span almost his entire life and are extremely varied. All are worth getting to know, and I believe thay have all been recorded. The Sonatas and Concerto's at least, are readily available

Tatiana SERGEYEVA: b1951 Her music is difficult to describe. It is recognisably 20th century in style, but is not hard on the ear. I don't think ant of these pieces are recordd, but samples are available of other works on the Tower Records website
Cello Sonata Sonata for Cello and Organ Serenade for Cello and Piano Spanish Variations for four Celli
1986 1988 1992 1994
Rodion SHCHEDRIN: b1932 Shchedrin's style is a little difficult to pinpoint. His music is often tonal and very beautiful, though every piece seems different. The Cello concerto has recently been recorded, and, "In the Style of Albeniz," is also recorded
"In the Style of Albeniz," for Cello and Piano "Russische Weisen," for Solo Cello Cello Concerto, "Sotte Voce." Cello Sonata Quadrille for Cello and Piano
1961 1990 1994 1996 ?
Vissarion SHEBALIN: 1902-1963 An unfortunately neglected composer. His music is original and exciting. His writing is fairly conservative. I think it's fair to say that if you like middle period Shostakovich, you'll probably like Shebalin's music. A large amount of his output has been recorded. Most recently, the complete String Quartets by Olympia
Sonata for Cello and Piano Op. 51 No.3
1960
Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH: 1906-1975 Without a doubt, the greatest Soviet composer. If you don't know any Shostakovich, the 5th Symphony (or cello sonata in you're a cellist) is a good place to start. Nearly Shostakovich's entire output has been recorded, including all of the works here, with the possible exception of the Moderato of 1934. In my opinion, his E flat concerto for Cello Op. 107 is one of the greatest works ever written for the instrument. Other pieces that go highly recommended are the first Violin Concerto, Second piano trio, 5th, 8th and 13th Symphonies, and all the String Quartets
Three pieces for Cello and Piano Op. 9 Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor Op. 40 Moderato for Cello and Piano Two pieces fom Ballet Suite No.2 for Cello and Piano Op. 89c (Adagio and Spring Waltz) Cello Concerto No.1 in E flat major Op. 107 Orchestration of Schumann's Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 125 Cello Concerto No.2 in G minor Op. 126 Orchestration of Tishchenko's Cello Concerto No.1 Op. 134b Transcription of Viola Sonata Op. 147 for Cello and Piano

Valentin SILVESTROV: b1937 Silvestrov is a composer that I'm desperate to explore, but haven't quite managed to yet. His music is deffinately contemporary in style, but well worth listening to. He creates to incredible sound worlds. Both the Meditation and Postludium have definately been recorded. The others, I'm not sure about
"Meditation," for Cello and Piano arr. "Meditiaion," for Cello and Chamber Orchestra "Postludium," for Celo and Piano Cello Sonata Elegy for Cello and Tam-tam
1972 1972 1982 1983 ?
Sergei SLONIMSKY: b1932 From what I've heard, Slonimsky's music seems to be mostly tonal. Perhaps I'd even go as far as saying neo-classical, though that's probably pushing it. A lot of piano music has been recorded. The only cello piece available it seems is the 1972 Suite for Cello and Piano
Three pieces for Solo Cello Suite for Cello and Piano "Diphiramb," for Cello, Piano and Ensemble Cello Sonata
1964 1972 1982 1986
Dmitri SMIRNOV: b1948 Not completely sure - I suspect aavnt-garde as he is combined with composers such as Denisov, Vustin and Vasks on recordings. No cello music recorded I believe

Yevgeney STANKOVICH: b1942 Intensely dissonant but expressive music. Not much recorded, but the 4th Symphony listed here is recorded on Marco Polo and can be heard on the Tower Records Website
