From what we've seen of Welman Matrix, he is a scientist of sorts. He did not, as before thought (even by his son), cause the destruction of the Twin City. In the early days before Mainframe had a guardian or was online, Welman was trying to find a way to reach other systems and peoples. In doing so he created a portal device, the first of its kind in Mainframe. When Welman demonstrated it to the people of the system, he inadvertently allowed a virus by the name of Killabyte into the system. In passing through the portal, Killabyte caused a massive explosion, destroying the Twin City and nullifying all the sprites of Mainframe, minus Welman's children, Dot and Enzo. Entering Mainframe for some reason also split Killabyte into two separate beings: Megabyte and Hexadecimal.

Besides the current flaw of being trapped as a null, Welman still expresses the love for his children he had so long ago. Though he may look quite unusual, he is still and intelligent, caring person. As for when� or if he will be able to return to his sprite form, that remain to be seen.
