As a young sprite, Enzo Matrix was as hyper and excitable as any child his age. When Bob arrived in Mainframe, Enzo immediately attached himself to Bob. The Guardian became the boy's friend, mentor, and father figure. But the companionship of Bob and Dot was simply not enough for a boy like him. Enzo needed the friendship of a sprite his own age, a playmate.

When Enzo was very young, his father Welman Matrix was deleted in a disastrous explosion caused by one of his father's experiments. The Twin City and everyone in it were destroyed. Dot and Enzo became the only sprites in Mainframe, until Bob arrived. Enzo blamed his father for the absence of any peers Enzo's own age. He became so distraught so that when a game cube came down, he intentionally entered it, against his sister's orders. There he met a beautiful young game sprite name AndrAIa; the two instantly bonded. Just before the game ended, AndrAIa downloaded a copy of herself onto Enzo's icon, and she left the game with him.

As the World Web Wars reached a climax, Enzo was made a cadet guardian by Bob. His mentor had planned to send Enzo to the Guardian Academy as soon as they could. But they were betrayed by Hexadecimal and Megabyte; the virus e-mailed Bob to the perilous environment of the Web, leaving Mainframe with a small cadet as its only guardian.

Some time after this, Enzo, AndrAIa, and Frisket rebooted in to an arena-fighting style game. The user chose a character called Zaytan. In Enzo's turn against Zaytan, the creature slashed out Enzo's left eye. And Enzo lost the game. The only way to avoid being deleted was change into game sprite mode. The game cube left, taking the three with it. After this, not much is known about what happened: Enzo's eye was replaced by a gold targeting eye, linked directly to Gun. He began calling himself only Matrix. The two sprites game hopped, searching both for Bob and a way back home.

When they brought Bob and Ray Surfer, it was apparent that Matrix and AndrAIa were very close. They were now much older, since game time runs faster than regular time. This was a shock to both Bob and Dot; to see their young friends nearly their own age. In the fight against Megabyte, the guardians tricked the User into rebooting Mainframe. This brought about a complicating change: a copy of Matrix's younger self appears in the reboot. Now there are two Enzo Matrixs in the system. To distinguish between them, the older Enzo continued to call himself Matrix.

Inside Matrix, there is darkness and chaos. For half his life he lived in the games with only AndrAIa and Frisket as company, with little or no adult guidance. His hatred for viruses grew in leaps and bounds, and he strengthened himself so that if he were to have the chance to face Megabyte, he would be ready. But in doing so, he pushed down his younger self, that weak and pathetic little boy known as Enzo. Now that he is faced daily with a younger copy of himself, small and fragile, a war rages inside, and the outcome is yet unknown.

Outside, Matrix continues to keep up his gruff exterior, hardened by a grim and dangerous life. He rarely allows his emotions surface, guarding them even more carefully than his sister. However, his love for AndrAIa is clearly seen every time he looks at her.
