The King Challenge returned to the Gold Coast in 2001 for the third time with a top class field of 7 players. The challenge was played in brilliant conditions over four days on Royal Pines, Lakelands, Robina Woods and the recently opened Glades layouts. Much of the pre-tournament focus was on Rohan who was going for his third straight Challenge, however recent knee surgery had robbed him of playing time in the lead-up. Another rookie joined the tour with Kelvin 'the Jones boy' Jones playing in his first Challenge. AB was back and keen to pass on 'the spoon'!. Gold Coast veterans Mike, Steve and Simon had two previous Gold Coast challenges behind them and new the pressure that go with sun, beach, golf and drinking. The opening round was held on the East Course at Royal Pines. A relatively tame opening with Mike, Steve and Paul heading the leader board.....more Round 1 details

The Jack Nicklaus designed Lakelands hosted the second round. Mike had one of those rounds that are all too rare to finish with a nett 64, Steve played solid golf to maintain second on the leaderboard. The rest of the field settling in .....more Round 2 details

The tour returned to Robina Woods, first played on the 1998 Challenge. Steve and AB played the best golf of the day, Mikes game came unstuck, Kels swing almost collapsed completely and Paul had a bad day on the greens ...more round 3 details

A very early start to the final round with the tour knocking the early morning dew off the grass. Mike needed to hold onto a 5 shot lead to win, memories of the king Challenge Capital flooded back but a consistent round kept the pressure on and Mike held on to win by 7 from Steve, the tour veterans finishing one, two. ...more round 4 details

King Challenge
Mikes second round 64 set up his Challenge win which he put down to a tip from Simon in the llead up to the event and the inspirational Hawks win over the Power in the AFL final on the Friday night! A consistent putter also helped claim the purple jacket

Putting Trophy
The closely contested putting trophy finished with a tie between Mike and Simon on 131 putts each. Mr Putt himself Rohan finished next on the leaderboard with 135. Pauls shocker at Robina gave him the King Teaspoon for most putts with 149 putts.

The King Spoon
Another rookie took the infamous spoon with Kel Jones struggling in his first challenge, AB was glad to rid himself of the wooden stirrer!
