The King Challenge returned to Robina Woods, venue for the first round of the Gold Coast Challenge in 1998. Steve played the best golf that day leading the field after round 1. He teamed with AB and Paul in the first grouping and played solid golf on the opening nine picking up pars on the 4th and 6th. AB played seven great holes between 2 and 8 but 'bookmarked' them with 8's on 1 and 9. Pauls muesli and Earl Grey strategy began to show holes as his day begun with a shocker off the first tee, and the putter never got hot. The second group started strong with pars on the first to Rohan, Simon and Mike, Simon continued the par train with pars on 2 and 3. Mike picked up a birdie on 3 to maintain his lead, Kel was showing the strain of the Challenge and a late night at the Casino, the 4 putt on the 6th hole not to be mentioned! Rohan got the game going again until disaster on the 9th and a shanked 2 iron into the trees saw him drop back the leaderboard.!

Fore!!!! - 1st hole Par 4 349 metres
Pauls round at Robina wasnt his best, the tee shot summed it up!
King power - 1st hole Par 4 349 metres
Steve gives the King the full power setting, crunching up the first fairway

Steve consolidated his round on the back nine with 2 more pars and cracked the longest drive on the classic Par 5 18th hole. His nett 71 kept him in the hunt for the jacket. AB again was pondering what may have been after mixing 4 pars with 3 sevens and an eight! Despite the inconsistency his putter was on fire with only 30 putts and he finished with a nett 72 for the round. Pauls anguish at the Woods continued with the putter failing again, he finished with 42 putts to equal Mikes 'Most putts in a round' record from the fateful day at Royal Canberra. However Paul kept his cool and the putter stayed in the bag not at the bottom of the lake on 18!
Kels day went from bad to worse as he carded a 10 on the par 4 11th. Standing on the 12th tee the rookie Jones boy was close to complete golfing breakdown as he was almost physically unable to swing the club! (He played the next 4 holes in 1 over!). But alas, the pressure and hangover had got the better of the Jones Boy! Rohan, Simon and Mike all had troubles over the back nine. Rohans game was still on the 8th hole where he had left it, the purple jacket was leaving the Tudor wardrobe!! Simon racked up 3 pars but the two par 3s cost him 9 shots. Mike parred 10 and 11 and looked to be cruising but then dropped 10 shots in 3 holes and as he finished on 18 with a 7 shot lead had the media talking of Royal Canberra all over again!
