The King Challenge Melbourne 2001 teed off in brilliant conditions at Portsea with reigning title holder Rohan 'Tiger' Tudor leading the field away. The record field of 8 included past purple jackets winners, Rohan Tudor, Mike Hauser, Steve DaCosta and Andrew Millar. Tour veterans Simon Cummins and Richard Bondietti were joined by Paul Baron who returned after his debut at The Murray in 2000, and tour rookie Andrew 'AB' Bennett. With most players struggling on the front nine (only 3 players broke 50), it was Bondy who lept to the top of the leaderboard after 9. Bondy carded three pars in the opening nine and is known for his fast starts (Round 1 - Sydney 2000). Rohan and Simon were looking good, dont ask the rest, high scores abounded as golf balls flew at all angles. The pressure of King Tour Golf was truly evident early on.!

Play hotted up on the back nine at Portsea with Andrew Millar getting onto the very rare 'birdie train' on the 12th and 13th holes, another 3 pars gave him the lead after Round 1 by two shots. Andrew was the only player to better par during the furst round. Rohan, Steve, Simon and Mike all improved on the front nine scores, Mike came within a tap-in of a hole in one on the 12th . Andrew M, and Paul also birdied 12. Simon could have been closer to the lead except for a wayward putter. ABs woes continued on the back nine and he looked to be taking the spoon home after finishing +20 in a forgettable day for the tour rookie.
