Rohan wears
the Purple Jacket for the second time by winning the King Challenge Melbourne
2001. In this exclusive interview Rohan lets us into some of the secrets
behind the classic win...
How does it
feel to win back to back Purple Jackets?
There is great pride in winning one Purple Jacket because it puts you
in elite company, the second one was more relief after it was done. There
was added pressure going in as the current Jacket holder to perform &
to retain it meant I could still look good at any function that required
the formal look.
What was the
game plan?
Take it one hole at a time, especially on the first round to make sure
I
didn't play myself out of contention. After that it was to make sure that
Bondie didn't knobble me on too many beers or bourbon.
When did you
know you had the game won?
I felt comfortable over the last 3 holes at Kingston Links with Andrew
Millar imploding with the driver - he lived & died by the sword. Then
Steve mentioned he was close & I had to make sure I didn't hit the
shot on 18 into the water to give him a sniff. I think the shot that really
turned it around for me was holing the birdie
putt on 14 (if that had missed the hole I was looking at least a 10 footer
back).
The crowd were
amazed when you took a putter out of the bunker on the 18th at Kingston
Links, why did you go the putter?
You have to go back to the 6th at Kingston Links after 5 pars on the trot
& the 8 iron I hit into 6 caught the lip of the greenside bunker.
I took 4 shots to get out of that bunker & again on 9 I took 2 out
of the bunker. Not knowing exactly how far in front I was the putter was
the best option given there was no lip on the 18th bunker. There was also
the putting trophy up for grabs & I wanted to make sure I had a chance
of a 1 putt.
You played
well on links style courses yet have trouble on Thomson designs, how can
you explain this?
Again its down to the bunkers - Thommo loves putting pot bunkers in ridiculous
places like the middle of a fairway 220 off the tee.
After your
first two Challenges (Capital - w/d, Murray - spoon) critics said you
would never win a major and would share the honour of best player never
to win a major with Bondie and Phil Mickelson, how did you turn it around?
Definitely buying the Callaway 3 wood - being able to get of the tee without
having to hit the girlie 5 iron. I was also given the Flake's (Great White
)secret as a present (I suspect it was another knobbling trick - but can't
find the culprit). After watching the video & trying the attractive
black wrist guard, realized that if I continued on with it I would probably
either break a wrist or look really stupid. I took the safe option &
offered to lend it to Steve (he also wisely refused) & then threw
it away. Obviously, if the Flake really did have the secret would he share
it with everyone else ?
Rohan Tudor,
congratulations on winning the King Challenge Melbourne 2001
