Workshop 5:

Transnational & Global Communities

Outcomes

Issues Discuss

Issues that were brought up by the presentation group of Workshop 5 are stated below:-

  • Definition of Transnational and Global Communities

  • Types of Transnational and Global Communities

  • Issues of Transnational and Global Communities

What was Learnt

The first presenter of Workshop 5, Emma MacDonald, started off the presentation by defining the meaning of transnational and global. Transnational means reaching out beyond national borders, while global means worldwide. The presenter told us that transnational virtual communities can help both business and multicultural societies. And, internet technologies can help businesses to liaises with one another, promoting global commerce, and also help business share information internally and externally.

The next presenter, Skye Neilson, told us that transnational migration is a means to expanding networks, which is an impact of globalization. The presenters link the issues of virtual communities to transnational communities as they are both boundless communication that is happening around the world. And, virtual communities help business in various ways in different business models. In addition, virtual communities can help to abolish boundaries with people and encourage open communication to exist.

Next, the presenters discussed about the types of communities, which consist of global virtual teams, communities for people with similar interest, global e-commerce communities, and global peer-to-peer communities. Global virtual teams are teams that are set up by companies to implement projects, maybe working around the clock at different location scatter around the world. Communities for people with similar interest are establish for people to same interest. Global e-commerce communities are are business people to doing business online or share business tips. While global peer-to-peer communities are files sharing communities, which mostly involves legal issues.

Lastly, the presenters talked about the issues relating to the communities, such as language and cultural differences, and global language. The presenters also compared the advantages and disadvantages of the global language. And, discussed to us about the copyright issues that arise from the communities of file sharing.

Evaluation

This presentation was presented in a not very organized way to me, I think it is probably the workshop topics for week is fairly difficult to be presented in an organized way. Until now, I still could not quite clearly define the differences between transnational communities and global communities, I think there are too much overlapping characteristic between the two communities to be defined.

The presentation group did quite a fairly good job in the presentation, and I believe much research work was done in order for them to be fully prepared for the workshop. Much of the issues that brought up by the presentation group were not covered in my preparation work for this workshop. As a result, there were many new issues learnt in this workshop. I think this topic were too broad and the presentation group covered to many issues in this workshop resulting the presentation to be too long, hence, many students brought off-topics questions to discuss during the presentation period.

In conclusion, the presentation group did a pretty good job in moderating the topic, especially for such a broad workshop topics that is not easy to be moderated.
