Today is the first official tutorial of my Virtual Communities, we learn how to communicate online with LiveNet. Many of you might not know what LiveNet is... it is a kind of program that allows you to have a group communication online, just like the popular-used ICQ, IRC, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. After learning how to use LiveNet in our lab class, I feel that even online communication software is like a monopolized business model in the Internet World, because nowadays online communication software is dominated by ICQ, MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger as they have already established a solid position when the Internet Industry boomed in mid 90's. Moreover, the rapidly changing preferences of the users are not easy to cope with when there are such strong competitors in the industry. Therefore, new online communication softwares, like LiveNet and TeamWave are not easy to establish themselves a position in this industry, especially when they couldn't provided the kind of service that could delight the users, like changing background of the chat room, emotion icons, sounds alert, and etc.
Today we learnt another online communication software called TeamWave. As usual, its function is just like any others online communication software. This software works by setting up a chat room, and people who is online will select a chat room to log in to. Then, interactions begin... not only chatting, but drawing, and sending files and URL too. There is a huge "white-board" in the room that allow oneself imagination to go wild. If you got bored sticking in the same old chat room, TeamWave allows the flexibility to roam around other chat rooms. It's easy checking in and out of chat rooms whenever you like. However, there is a set back in this program. There isn't a nickname function that allows you to change your name appearance. The name that appeared on the screen is our student identification number that is set in earlier by our lecturer. This gave us a hard time in identifying who is who when we were chatting... "Who is 10011777.. ???"...
19 August, 2003 - Online Lecture Today I attended a very special lecture, it was an eye-opener. Our lecturer presented our lecture in a very special way... online, not the kind of normal boring way where there is someone talking in front with the prepared slides projecting to whiteboard. It's like... having an online communication and learning what we have to learn from our subject at the same time. Sounds weird, huh? This is the most special kind of lecture that I've ever attended... truly... it's entertaining. This is the way where you could have fun and learn at the same time. There is more interaction that you could ever imagine in a lecture. The lecture was held in the lab, where everyone could sit in front of the computer to have lecture and interactions at the same time. Well, I have to admit... I feel that I'm there to have fun more than to learn. Isn't this the way to learn??? By having fun, you could absorb more of what you should learn. Have you ever dislike studying a subject that you could sit in front of the book facing the same old page after an hour knowing you have studied nothing. This sounds very pathetic, doesn't it? But, I'm quite sure a number of you have done this before. Me too!!! Hopefully, our next Virtual Communities' lecture would be held online too. This is more like what we should be doing while studying IT. The same old boring way of presenting lectures are driving me to doze off in lectures after attending so many years of classes... Sorry for my sincerity...
