PHYSICAL FEATURES

Nueva Vizcaya is located in the southernmost part of region 2 and is regarded as the gateway to one of the great wonders of the world �The Banaue Rice Terraces�. It is a landlocked province bounded to the north by Ifugao, Isabela to the northeast, Quirino to the east, Aurora to the southeast and Nueva Ecija to the south, the province of Pangasinan to the southwest, and Benguet to the west. It is composed of 15 municipalities and has one congressional district. Its total land area is 402,231 hectares.

Its capital town, Bayombong, is about 268 kilometers from Metro Manila and 118 kilometers south of the regional capital town of Tuegegarao The province is accessible by land passing through the historical Dalton Pass along the Maharlika Highway. By air, the province can be reached using the Bagabag airport through chartered light aircraft from Manila in 35 & 40 minutes. Travel time by land and is five to six hours from Manila.

The province is generally mountainous with steep landforms. Only about 14% its land area is gently sloping and flat to nearly flat.

There is no pronounced rainfall pattern in the province. It is relatively wet from May to October and dry during November to February. The coldest months are December and January and hottest in April and May. The coldest temperature is recorded at 180 Celsius and the hottest at 320 Celsius.

The province has a total population of 334,970 as of 1995 census, the third largest and the second fastest growing in the region with a population growth rate of 2.2%. Population density is 83 persons per square kilometer.

Labor force of about 193,277 are dispersed into the following fields: 60.9% are in agriculture, industry and forestry; 33.1% are in the trade and services sector; and, the remaining 6% are in manufacturing, constructions, etc.

Major trade skills available in the province are rattan craft, food processing, metalworking, woodworking, light and heavy equipment operations, computer programming, software application as well as electronic technology.

Ilocano is the lengua franca although other major dialects spoken are Tagalog, Gaddang, Isinay and variation of Igorot dialects. Majority of the population can communicate in English.
