Career Plan

For the past eleven years, I have been working full time as a computer operator for Norfolk Public Schools. As a computer operator, I operate and maintain the mainframe computer system that NPS uses for their payroll and financial systems. I run and process batch computer programs submitted by programmers for the payroll and financial departments for various reasons such as processing payroll and printing employee checks. Within the last year, my role as a computer operator has been evolving to meet the demands of the new technology that NPS is purchasing to keep current in the computing world. The financial system has since migrated from the mainframe system to a more advanced web-based system. In the next month or two, the payroll is also expected to migrate over to a web-based system. With these advents in technology, my position as a computer operator has as begun to evolve. In August of this year, DNOC or Data Networking Operations Center merged with Computer Operations. With this merger, I now have additional duties overseeing the school district's network system. Part of my responsibilities now is to report any outages at a location to our technicians. Outages can be anything from a dropped connection from a school causing the school to lose access to the network and internet to a piece of hardware that has degraded and needs replacing. When we finally cease operating on the mainframe, my job will be to oversee the DNOC and occasionally processing print jobs such as student report cards. In the months to come, I will be receiving additional training to better handle these new duties. As the computing world is in constant flux, so to is Norfolk Public Schools in maintaining a world class educational system and their dedication to its employees and its customers: The families of the city of Norfolk .
