Class 423 4-VEP
SWT 4-VEP 3469 stands at platform 15 on saturday 12th June 2003. It has just worked a service from the Windsor lines.
12/16/14
A line up of electric stock on the windsor side of Waterloo station: 4-Vep 3469, a 455 suburban train and 73109, SWT's much traveled thunderbird loco, which was unusually placed at the end of platform 17 to act as a temporary buffer stop.
12/06/04
Vep 3540 leaves platform 6 into the beautiful June sunshine with a working into the depths of the southern region.
12/06/04
To celebrate the final days of the slam door stock on SWT, 4-Vep 3417 has been painted back into the BR blue livery it carried when first intruduced to the southen region. 3417 stands at Waterloo on it's second day in passenger service since it returned to BR blue with the 12:38 Waterloo-Porstmouth Harbour on 12th June 2004.
12/06/04
An exelent job has been done on the unit and the BR blue colour looks stunning, there are however several features that are not original, not that they detract from the exelent job at all, firstly when the VEP's wore BR blue the windowframes were never painted grey, but were anodised alluminium, the underframe should be grey rarther than black, the cantrail stirp would not have been on the original paint scheme but is now required by law, as is the extended yellow warning pannel, which would originally occupy just the area inside the gangway connector.
12/06/04
3417 provides quite a contrast to 4-Cig 1393 in South West Trains livery. This picture shows the raised allumillium BR double arrow on the cab side, unfortunatly I am not old enough to have seen the original!
12/06/04
3417 looks stunning as it pulls out of Woking for it's onward working to Portsmouth Harbour. The overall BR blue livery was renounded for fading terribly, 3417 is shinning here on just it's second day in passenger service, but how well will it weather?
12/06/04
3417 has arrived back at London Waterloo after working a service from Porstmouth Harbour. The unit seems to work exclusively on this route, berthing at Fratton, although the unit is based at Wimbledon!
12/06/04
The nameplate 'Gordon Pettitt'. The plaque underneath reads: 'In 1967 this train 3417 was one of the first Veps to arrive on the southern region and it will be one of the last to be withdrawn by South West Trains. To commemorate this it has been named Gordon Pettitt in honour of one of the most respected managers of the former BR southern region.'
12/06/04
South Eastern Trains 4-VEP stands at platform 6 at Charring Cross with the leading part of an 8 car train. The Veps are likely to be the last slam door stock to run on South Eastern, but the condition of most of them leaves much to be desired as all the slam door stock was neglected under Connex, and although South Eastern have improved the damage is already done.
12/06/04
From a distance South Eastern Vep 3583 does not look too gruby, but closer inspection reveals otherwise. Note that South Eastern units are fitted with tripple window bars to prevent people such as myself loosing their heads, that does'nt stop them being incredibly annoying though! The unit waits in platform 5, Charring cross leading 4-Cep 1578 to Ramsgate.
12/06/04
A closer look at the DMS of 3583 reveals the true cleanlieness of the unit. It is clear that somebody has tried to clean the unit, and failed misserably, the effect being a patchwork of clean and dirty Vep! Some South Eastern and South Central units can become so dirty they appear almost brown in colour. Also note the plane windows, which some Veps have been treated with in recent times when the originals have become due for replacement.
12/06/04
South West Trains still have 4 of their 4-Veps in Network South East livery, they are 3415, 3809/10/11. On 8th May 2004 3811 stands at London Waterloo heading a 12 coach train. The NSE liveried Veps provide a nice contrast to the SWT livery.
08/05/04
SWT fortunatly keep all their units in great condition, despite their future, and therefore the 4 Vep's which remain in NSE livery are the best examples of the livery still running, and have not been allowed to deteriorate like the Ceps and Cigs on South Eastern. Most of the SWT Veps have even received a new coat of Network South East colours! It looks good!
08/05/04
South Eastern Trains Vep 3805 arrives at Ashford international platform 5. As is customary on South Eastern the unit is looking rarther grubbby.
08/05/04
Vep 3521 pulls out of Ashford International on 8th May 2004 towards the east of Kent.
08/05/04
Sadly the end is now here for the remainig Mk1 slam door EMU's on 29th July 2004 3509 and 3581 make their final jouney on the southern region with a Wimbledon Park-Shoeburryness scrap train headed by 67030. The train leaves Clapham Junction just under 1 hour late.
29/07/04
The full train heads towards the Norh London Line and for the final time the pair of scrap VEP's can be seen alongside their fellow EMU's they have worked with for the past 40 years. The EMU's have had their shoegear removed and although a double red headcode is displayed by 3581 a flashing tail lamp is also used as the units are no longer powered.
29/07/04
Veps 3509 and 3581 traverse very un-southern rails as they pass Barking on their fateful journey to Shoeburryness behind 67030. The suroundings are like nothing the units would have seen before, overhead power is the normal here, far away from the 3rd rail, The C2C 357 electrostar units are very dissimilar to anything from the Southern region.
29/07/04
3581 dissapears beneath the bridge at Barking never for me to see it again. It really is a crime to send these units to this end. Thankfully it now appears that a Vep has been designated for preservation by the Railway Heritage Committe, it is likely to be Vep 3417 that will be saved.
