Class 205 (2/3H) 'thumper' DEMU

Page Last Updated: 06/06/04 7 picture in this gallery This gallery is not complete- many more thumpers still to be added!

On the 18th October 2003 2H 205025 reverses out of platform 1 at Oxted heading for the bay platform. 205025 is my favorite of the Thumpers, a selection of units which I have only known a short while, but are being withdrawn from service at a steady rate. 205025 has since been taken out of service as it ran out of miles to an overhaul which it was not given, thankfully it will go to a good home at the Mid-Hants Watercress line.

205025 arrives at crowbrough while working a service to Uckfield. This shot and the following one show some roof detail of the unit. The DTCL (driving trailor composite lavatory) is at the front of this picture.

Another shot of 205025 arriving at crowbrough from the other side of the footbridge. This picture shows the DMBS (Driving Motor Brake Standard). I took this picture as it shows the thumper and also an MPV (DR98926+DR98976) out on the line doind sandite duties. I am glad I took it as it has since prooved an invaluable source of reference for detailing the roof on my model of 205025.

The 'nice' end of 205025 at Uckfield. The triangle on the class 205 and 207 units was to signal to station staff which end the guards compartment was, the triangle told staff that the guard was in that coach. Other units such as the EPB also had this feature at times in their life, but only the thumpers still have it! For enthusiasts the triangle is more important because it tells us where the engine is in the unit, again the end with the triangle next to the guards comparment.

The other end of 205025, the cab of the DTCL at Uckfield. This is now the end of the line, at the rebuilt Uckfield station. The line however used to extend from here 7.5 miles further south to connect up with the lines from Brighton and London at Lewes. The cab of the thumper is a very simplistic affair, other than the GLV's they are the sole remaining SR stock with non-corridor ends.

The luxuries of first class in a 'thumper'! The seats are wider than in Standard class, however 205025 has even more graffiti in it's this first class compartment you would think standard would be just as good! I'm sure these vandals did'nt have a first class ticket to cause this mess, probly not a ticket at all.

3H 205033 stands at the platform 3 buffers at Oxted. It is working was working the Oxted-Uckfield shuttles on 18th October 2003 along with 205025.
