| RAT TRAP: Device used for holding a bird and keeping it afloat for a water blind. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| RECAST: A second attempt to send the dog from the start line. Normally only allowed when there is confusion by the dog or extenuating circumstances occur and it is allowed by the judges. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| REFUSAL: A dog's refusal to do as the handler commands it. This could entail a "water refusal", "whistle refusal" or "cast refusals" etc. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| REMOTE SEND: When a dog is released to retrieve a bird while somewhere other than in the heel position. Usually at a distance from the handler. Often a handler will be required to stand behind a holding blind with the dog placed in front of the holding blind and the dog is released while in these positions. This can also be done from a boat, platform, deck etc while actually hunting or during a hunt test. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| RETIRED GUN: A gunner that disappears after firing and throwing a mark. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ROLLING THE BIRD: Whe a dog has a bird in mouth and is moving its jaws and rotating the bird around in its mouth. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| RUNNER: The bird, which remains on the ground, but moves in a hurried fashion away from the dog. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| RUNNING ORDER: The listing of the names of all dogs and handlers in all braces in the order in which they were drawn to run. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| RUNOFF: When two or more dogs have the same score and require an additional series or test to determine a winner. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SAIL: The act of shooting and hitting a bird so that it continues to fly. Usually caused by poor targeting of the bird or under estimating the range of the bird. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SALTING: Putting several bumpers out in the area of the fall or wiping the ground with a bird to scent the area to help young dogs be successful. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SCRATCH A DOG: To withdraw a dog from a hunting test. Normally only bitches in season or injuries are allowed with a full or partial refund. Normally must be substantiated by a note from the veterinarian. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SECONDARY SELECTION: (Personal interpretatioin.) 1) Secondary selection is retrieving the shortest bird remaining after retrieving the last bird down. (Field trial and Lardy training methods.) 2) When the handler decides which bird will be picked up next. (Typical belief by the hunt test group and actual hunters.) |

| SHACKLED BIRD: When the natural movement of the bird is restricted. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SHOREBREAKING: A method for teaching the dog not to avoid water, i.e., stay in the water and not run the shore. Also to swim past islands and points without landing. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SIGHT BLIND: See "BLINDS" | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| SINKER: A bird which is so water logged or deteriorated, that it sinks below the surface level of the water. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SIT TO FLUSH: The process of a dog stopping and holding still when game is flushed or a firearm report is issued. Most handy around a duck blind because it keeps the dogs from getting in the way of the gunners when there are low-flying decoying birds such as teal. This will also help a dog concentrate on marking multiple falls. Useful in upland hunting, as it prevents the dog from getting shot as it flushes a bird and the hunter quickly shoots at the bird. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SLIP LEAD: A simple lease with each end having a loop, ring or opening so the leash can slip through easily and quickly. A British slip lead is of the same design but has a leather stop that can be slid down and tightened near the neck area so the lead will not slip over the dog's head. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SLIPPED WHISTLE/WHISTLE REFUSAL: A dog's refusal to respond to a whistle command. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SLUICE: Shooting a bird once it is down on the water. Normally to humanely dispatch a wounded bird. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SPINNING: When a dog spins in a circle on the way to a mark or blind. Normallya form of stress, or lack of confidence, and reason for marking down a score. An undesirable occurrence. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SPLASH: A water mark that actually lands in the water making a visible and audible splash. Many water marks land high and dry on opposite banks but "splashes" actually land in the water. Waterfowling slang for felling a bird. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| STEADY: The term used when a dog sees a bird or birds fall while remaining in the position commanded by the handler. A steady dog should remain where positioned until commanded to do otherwise by the handler. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| STICKY: A reluctance to give up a retrieve freely and/or mouthing the bird as it is removed from the mouth. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| STYLE: A dog's willingness, ability and manner of retrieving, as characterized by desire, speed, courage and attitude. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SUCTION: Attraction to a certain area because of scent, a previous mark, terrain or interest. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| SWITCH: On a multiple mark when a dog goes to the area of one mark and hunts and cannot find the bird so switches to another mark. Multiple birds must be on the ground for this situation to apply...otherwise this is returning to an old fall and is not switching.
