HACKING/HACKER: Intimidation, over handling, excessive repetition of a commands during a handling situation.
HANDLE: Directions given by the handler to the dog.
HANDLERThe person releasing the dog to make a retrieve or handling the dog to a blind during a test, trial or training.
HAPPY BUMPERA bumper thrown in play or as a reward or encouragement for a dog.
HARD MOUTHThe action when a dog uses too much force in picking up or holding a bird. This action renders the bird unfit for human consumption.
HAZARDSObstacles that the dog has to learn to cross (a track), go through (heavy cover) or over (a ditch).
HEAD SWINGINGWhen a dog is sitting at the line waiting for marks to go down and he looks from gunner station to gunner station in anticipation of the marks. When the dogs swings his head from a mark going down in anticipation of another station throwing a bird. Often the dog misses or poorly marks the fall of a mark because of looking away too early.
HEELTo sit or walk at the side of the handler.
HEELING STICK: A riding crop or other item carried by the handler/trainer and used on the dog to remind it of it's proper place. This is not used to abuse the dog, rather provide a gentle, but firm, reminder of the correct place and/or position.
HIDDEN GUNA mark thrown by a bird boy when the bird boy is totally concealed from the dog's view. The dog hears a shot or call and sees the item to be retrieved thrown but does not see the bird boy.
HIGH: A bird that is completely rotten, possibly decomposing.
HIP DYSPLASIACanine hip dysplasia affects millions of dogs each year and can result in debilitating degenerative joint disease of the hip. It is estimated that more than 50% of the most popular large breed dogs will show x-ray evidence of canine hip dysplasia. Many will suffer from osteoarthritis, pain, and lameness, costing owners and breeders millions of collars in veterinary care, shortened work longevity, and reduced performance.
HOLDA command used during conditioned retrieving by some to insure that the dog knows that he must hold, in his mouth, any object placed there without movement of the jaw or excessive pressure.

HRC: Abbreviation for Hunting Retriever Club which is an international club in partnership with the United Kennel Club in running hunt tests.  See "UKC/HRC" for specific test information.  website

HUNTING SHORT: When a dog does not go deep enough on a marked retrieve or blind to find the bird.
INDENTEDA term used to identify the placement of a shorter mark in relation to other marks inthe field. A triple is thrown, the first mark is 200 yards away, the second mark 100 yards away, and the third mark is 250 yards away, the second mark is called "indented" because the dog must go long, then short, then long again. A difficult concept to teach.
JAMJudges Award of Merit.  This is not a placement in an event but it is a way for judges to commend a particular performance.
JUDGEThe individual evaluating and scoring the performance of the dog and handler.
KEY BIRDThe bird in a multiple mark, which is likely to prove the most difficult bird for the dog to retrieve successfully.
