BACK:
1)  A directional signal given with a raised arm and hand directing the dog away from the handler.
2)  The verbal command given to the dog to have him leave the handler - generally used as the command for a blind retrieve although in some situations it is used to send the dog for marks or used at the discretion of the handler.
BALKRefusal of the dog to leave the handler when sent on a retrieve. (Also called a "NO GO")
BANK RUNNING: When the dog runs along the bank instead of getting in the water and taking a direct line to the retrieve.
BANANAWhen the dog flairs to one side or another instead of taking a straight line to the desired retrieve. (Similar to "FLAIRING")
BASEBALL DRILL: A beginning drill used to teach the dog to take hand signals. A drill for teaching directional casts for the dog to take right and left "overs" and straight "back" casts.

BITCHFemale canine.
BLIND/s:
1)  A retrieve on either land or water where the dog does not know where the location of the bird or bumper is, but the handler does.  The handler must direct the dog to the location of the bird or bumper through a combination of whistles, arm signals and/or body movement and voice cues.
2)  A structure used by hunters to hide themselves or for the guns, bird boys, blind planters, live bird stations etc to hide behind.
Channel Blind: A water blind run in an area that, due to the close proximity of the bank on both sides, makes it very tempting for the dog to exit the water and up on land.
Cold Blind: A blind the dog has never run or practiced before.
Holding Blind: An enclosure for the dog and handler to stand behind while waiting to go to the line during a trial or hunting test. It is to prevent the waiting dog from seeing the tests before running them. It assists in keeping dogs in order and ready to run at the line promptly upon the judges command of, "Dog to the line." This type of blind can also be used for the handler to remote send a dog in the highest levels of competition or to honor from, often with the dog at the line and the handler behind the blind.
Hot Blind: A blind in which a shot was fired just prior to a retrieve. Also a blind in which the bird is in it's location during the running of the marks about and around the blind, making it possible for the dog to find it by accident during a big hunt on a mark.
Hunting Blind: A screen to hide the dog and handler from incoming birds while out hunting.
Pattern Blinds: Blind drills repeated by the dog to teach specific and technical concepts. A series of bumpers placed in the same location every time at the same place.
Sight Blinds: A training exercise to teach the dog the concept of blind retrieves. A blind the dog can see before being sent; a blind which was first thrown as a mark or walked out by the handler in plain sight of the dog. A blind which has a marker the dog can see and be guided by, such as a pole or cone.  A way to start young dogs on running blinds.
BLINKINGWhen the dog goes by an item that it has clearly seen and is supposed to have retrieved. Refusal of a dog to pick up a bird or training dummy.
BOLTINGA dog who runs away from his handler or the field during competition or during training.
BREAK OR BREAKING: Leaving before, or without having been sent by the handler.
BREAK THE HORIZONA bird is thrown so that it is silhouetted against the sky.
BRITISH SLIP LEAD: A simple leash with each end having a loop, ring or opening so the leash can slip through easily and quickly. A British slip lead is of the same design but has a leather stop that can be slid down and tightened near the neck area so the lead will not slip over the dog's head. (Very simliar to "SLIP LEAD" neither of which are allowed at AKC hunt tests.)
BUGGINGA dog that, while attempting to be lined up by the handler, refuses to look out at the blind or marked retrieve. This is a type of avoidance on the part of the dog. When the dog looks away to avoid the cast or looks away to avoid being sent.
BULLDOGA bird thrown or shot while the dog is returning from a previous retrieve. Used to see if the dog will drop the bird he is carrying and switch to the new bird. Also, used as a diversion for further retrieves, used in Master Hunting Tests not infrequently.  Dogs are required to mark the fall of the retrieve and normally pick it up during the course of a test.
BUMPERA plastic or canvas object, usually with a rope attached so it can be thrown, used to simulate a bird. White is generally used for marks and black or orange for blinds.  Also called "DUMMY"
