WALKING SINGLESA single mark thrown by a bird boy for a dog and, as the dog is released, the bird boy walks away from the area of the fall. This teaches the dog to concentrate on the item thrown and not the bird boy.
WALK UPThe handler walks with the dog at heel into the field and stops when the first bird is shot, the dog should stop and sit and watch the marks. A mark, or marks, that occur while the dog is in motion, progressing with the handler. A typical walkup will expect the dog to cease progress upon the first mark and shot, usually in a sitting position, and to remain there until all marks have fallen and the handler commands the retriever to pickup the marks.
WC/WCI/WCXSee "WORKING CERTIFICATE" and/or "CKC"
WHITE COATA term used to identify those people who participate in Field Trial events. Used because, in part, handlers wear white coats so as to be easily identified by their dog when the dog is a great distance away.
WIND
Crosswind: The wind blowing from gunner to the mark or blowing from the mark to the gunner (with a 90 degree throw).
Downwind: The wind blowing from the line to the mark.
Upwind: The wind is blowing from the mark to the dog on line.
WINGER: A mechanism somewhat like a large slingshot. The winger throws birds or bumpers at a fast rate and at longer distances than could be attained by hand throwing, as well as with more consistent accuracy. With a remote receiver and transmitter these can be set off remotely by a handler or judge, but must be reloaded by hand after each use.

A Zingwinger
WIPER BIRDA bird launched from a high power winger or mechanism which often crosses over the lines of previous marks or blinds and is designed to "erase" or "wipe out" the memory of the dog of any/all previous marks. Often set off like a diversion mark on the way back from a retrieve, often comes from near the line and crosses in front of the line, handler and judges and over top of or through the proper straight line to other previous marks. Also called "ERASER BIRD"
WORKING CERTIFICATE: Breed clubs have independent requirements for each breed. Some have only WC and WCX certificates, some may also offer a WCI. AKC does not award Working Certificate titles and does not acknowledge them as titles. CKC does have a Working Certificate program, which consists of three levels. See "CKC"
YARD WORKThis is where your most basic and fundamental skills are taught, away from actual retrieving work in the field. The term used to describe any number of drills and lessons that can be done in and around the kennel area. Baseball drill, obedience, force fetch and collar conditioning are but a few examples of yard work.
