| It is unfortunately quite common for people who have ME to experience difficulties in gaining benefit from the Government, either through obstacles standing in their way or unhelpful staff. However from a personal point of view I have not experienced any trouble unless you count filling in their numerous forms! Here is some information that you may find helpful: What benefits are available to those who become ill whilst in employment? You are entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) if you: Pay National Insurance and earn more than 77 a week, Have been ill for at least four days in a row including weekends and bank holidays. Your employer pays this for 28 weeks. If you have more than one job you may be entitled to SSP from each employer. After this period has ended your employer should give you a claim form that switches to Incapacity Benefit. You are entitled to Incapacity Benefit if you have: Paid NI contributions Been incapable of work because of sickness or disability for at least 4 days in a row including weekends and public holidays, Incapable of work and have been for at least 28 weeks without a break Aged 16 or over but under 20 (25 if you have been in education or training at least 3 months immediately before age 20) The period for which you were incapable of work begin before age 20 (25 if you were in education or training at least 3 months immediately before age 20) If you became sick before reaching state pension age, you may be able to get Incapacity Benefit after state pension age.If you have children you may be able to get extra money. |
