Source: The Record of the CARRITHERS FAMILY
compiled and arranged by
Mary Adam Carrithers Lawrence,
Shelbyville, Kentucky.
James Carothers (Carrithers) was born ??, married ?? Mary Porter, who was born ??. They emigrated from the Province of Ulster in 1779, to Pa., later came down the Ohio River to Kentucky in 1796. James died in Spencer County, then Shelby County, after 1813 and was buried in "old Cane Run Presbyterian Church yard, Jefferson County. Mary (Porter) Carrithers died evidently between March 12, 1812 and March 6, 1813 as her name is mentioned in a deed from James and Mary, his wife, to their son, Adam of date March 12, 1812 and her name is omitted in a deed from James to Adam of date March 6, 1813. She also was buried in "old Cane Run Churchyard.
James Carothers (and he used this spelling of the name then) took the oath of allegiance August second, 1779 (page 48 Pennsylvania in the war of the Revolution, 1775-1783, Vol. II, Egle.)
Have found as yet no court record of land purchase until 1804 when James Carrithers, Senior, Stephen and James, Jr., purchased land from James L. Henderson. These Deeds were made May 3, 1804 and are recorded in Shelby County Clerk's office, Shelbyville, Kentucky.
The James Carrithers, Sr., farm remained in the possession of some of his descendant's until 1909 and most of the house he built is still standing in excellent condition (1933).
The family has not always spelled their names Carrithers, in fact they do not all spell their name the same way now. Charles, the eldest son of James and Mary (Porter) Carrithers, and his descendants have always used Carothers or Carruthers.
