Mrs. Graham Lawrence,

My dear Madam:
Your letter of December 11, addressed to the Commissioner of
Pensions relative to Stephen and James Carothers or Carrithers,
was received in this office December 28, 1927.
Bounties for service in the war of 1812 were issued in the
form of land warrants. No such warrant has been found to have
issued to Stephen Carothers. However, warrant 25011 for 160
acres was issued February 12, 1822. Under the act of May 6, 1812
(2 Stat. 728), to William Carothers, son and other heirs at law
of James Carothers. The warrant was located October 10, 1825, on
the SE 1/4 Sec. 5, T. 1S., R. 7 W,. Arkansas, and patent was
issued the same day.
The following names appear on the request for 1284432 "K" JAR
Location: Nancy Carrithers; Dorothy Mahan, late Dorothy
Carrithers; Mary Carrithers; William Carrithers, Elizabeth
Carrithers; John W. Carrithers; Sarah Carrithers.
Most likely proof of heirship was required before the
warrant was located. However, there is no such proof of heirship
on file in this office.
This office has no record of the Indiana grants mentioned or
any further information concerning these soldiers.
Very Respectfully,
Acting Assistant Commissioner.
