| August 2006 Check the Chamonix Meteo site for updates to our local weather. You can view the current conditions in Chamonix on the webcam of the Chamonet website! . August 17th 2005 was 'the day' - Great news - We got 'the call' that a kidney was available. Rob had the transplant the same day. Now 1 year later, Rob has completed the North Face 'mini' Ultra Trail which is 1/2 the Tour of Mont Blanc, from Courmayeur Italy to Champex Switzerland and ending in our home town of Chamonix. It has 4500m of height gain and 4700m of downhill and 'only' 86K of distance (50 miles and 15,000 feet of uphill for those non-decimal system types). It is the 'baby race' of the big brother, which is 158K and 8600m of uphill/downhill and does the full tour of Mont Blanc from Chamonix to Chamonix circumnativating the mountain. . Our training consisted of starting the Spring with a flat 1/2 marathon in Geneva - which at that time was the furthest we'd run. We finished that together (Rob was still regaining his fitness) at 2:05. Then we started running further and further on trails. We read Dean Karnazes book 'Confessions of a Midnight Runner' and got a bit inspired. We didn't have time to do high mileage training but found a way to do low mileage training on a website. It involved 1 day of sprint training per week of around 50 minutes, and 1 day per week of a long run, which got longer and longer over the summer until we were running mountain marathons for training purposes. Luckily around here it was easy to do this and carry our own food and water, since the alpages have watering troughs with drinkable water to refill bottles easily along the way. Rob's time was 18h 30min and Gen's time was 20h 23m. Rob was 331 st overall out of 1053 runners and 147th in his age group out of 382 men, and Gen was 542nd overall and 22nd in her age group (out of 78 women in that group). With a time limit of 24 hours, there were quite a few who started and for one reason or another could not finish. 854 out of 1053 finished in Chamonix. Not sure how many other kidney transplant patients were in the race with Rob - he didn't mention to the race organizers that he'd had one but we have future ideas about running for organ transplant awareness that we'll follow up on. Click for Rob's times Click for Gen's times . What does a kidney transplant involve? Check it out. Also - have you signed your organ donor card and made your wishes known to your family members? We are grateful to whomever did this for Rob and has improved the quality of his life now immensely. . |
