October 2003 Check Chamonix Meteo site for updates to the local weather. . October 23rd - Our first snowfall of the season has left about 2 inches of snow on the ground. It's supposed to get warmer this weekend and all melt, but we are now jazzed for the ski season. Talking about going to Tignes for a weekend to warm up. This is the earliest it's snowed significantly since we moved to Chamonix..... . The Tuscany trip was very super hot weather, but we did manage to see some beautiful areas in Florence and Vinci (Leonardo's home town) as well as San Miniato and Podero d'Anselmo and Montelupo Fiorentino. The odd thing is that in tourist season the Italians are also gone, and many shops and restaurants were shut. Hmm. Tasted a lot of good Chianti and olive oil, as well as great Italian cooking. . In September Gen's Dad and step mom arrived and travelled without Robert to Trieste Italy. From there we hired a car and drove to Venice for a day and a half of being tourists, before setting off to find family roots. We found my dad's great grandfather's house (maternal) in a small town called Oznebrida Italy (at the Slovenian border). We were welcomed with open arms by Pietro Trusgnich and we all got to sleep in the house that Gen's great great grandfather was born in. We also met Pietro's cousin Olga Trusgnich. They are my dad's great grandfather's brother's son and daughter.... Both are in their 80s and both still super active and healthy. Pietro still makes Plum schnapps and works in his garden and orchard, and Olga still runs a restaurant in town. We also found the town of Zuodar where his maternal grandmother was from (not far down the road) and met some distant relatives there. Mind you these towns have about 10 or fewer houses in each one! . We then moved on to Slovenia to try to find the Novak side (paternal grandfather). We found the town where the family was from, but the last related Novak living there had died 5 years ago and the rest of the family had moved to Lubljana, we were told. This was also an area of small villages and roads that were single lane. It took us ages to find the town of Visejec, in fact. . We moved to our new house on September 1. We need roommates to afford the mortgage! ;-) Mark will be returning from the UK in January to live with us for the winter season, and Pete will be moving in December 1st. We will hvae a house full of computer geeks. Good thing the ADSL wireless internet is up and running in the new pad! . We are planning a trip to the UK for American Thanksgiving weekend at end of November. Our Jeep died at the start of October, throwing a spanner in the works, but we have found a relatively cheap 1997 Renault Laguna wagon to replace it and hope to complete the deal soon and be back on wheels. We are going to haul back books and a bit of furniture which Gen has stored at Rob's mum and dad's near Birmingham. |
