MISSION FOR THE OBLITERATION OF APPARITIONS
(The scene opens up inside Scott "The Boy" Hellings' hotel room in Toronto. Nurse Laurier walks in the room. Hellings is sitting in a corner, carefully reading something. Laurier has a large bag in her arms as she struggles to get inside the door. She calls out to Scott as she walks in.)
NURSE LAURIER-
"Scott? Are you here?
HELLINGS-
"Yeah."
NURSE LAURIER-
"Good. I just went out and grabbed you a little something."
HELLINGS-
"A present, for me? I thought you hated me."
NURSE LAURIER-
"Oh believe me, I do. But this is more of a present for myself...I got you some special herbal medicine to help that neck of yours."
HELLINGS-
"How does that help you?"
NURSE LAURIER-
"Because the faster I can get that neck of yours healed up, the faster I can get you out of my life."
HELLINGS-
"If you wanted some herbal medicine I'm sure you could have just called up Too Tuff and K Dogg...they seem to know all about that stuff. Too bad that its side effects include becoming subpar wrestlers."
(Nurse Laurier turns around to see The Boy reading a copy of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol.")
NURSE LAURIER-
"Are you actually reading?"
HELLINGS-
"Why is that so hard to believe?"
NURSE LAURIER-
"You don't strike me as the intellectual type."
HELLINGS-
"Clearly you don't know me that well."
NURSE LAURIER-
"Yeah, and I'm trying to keep it that way. (She looks at what he is reading.) Dickens? Are you in the Christmas spirit or something?"
HELLINGS-
"Nope. I'm just checking up on something."
NURSE LAURIER-
"Do you want me to spoil the ending for you?"
HELLINGS-
"No, I hate when endings are ruined. Kinda like the way the ending to my match last week was ruined."
NURSE LAURIER-
"It was?"
HELLINGS-
"Of course! Listen, I had Stevie Swing right where I wanted him when Rob Gamble stuck his nose into my business. I know it, you know it, the whole damn world knows it!"
NURSE LAURIER-
"What? I saw that match and he was about ready to finish you off!"
HELLINGS-
"You see? That's just how brilliant I am! You were fooled too! I betcha didn't know I was a brilliant actor, did you? What can I say? I excel at everything I do. After all, I am The Boy and that does mean I am The Best!"
NURSE LAURIER-
"You have obviously suffered far too much head trauma in your career."
HELLINGS-
"Look, the fact is that I had that win in the bag...even though Mercy let me down and left me to fight alone."
NURSE LAURIER-
"What? You left Mercy alone and you just stood by and watched him get eliminated! It was all your fault!"
HELLINGS-
"Au contraire; I was late because YOU made me late. It was your massage that caused me to miss the start of the match."
NURSE LAURIER-
"How? I left you ten minutes before the match even started."
HELLINGS-
"Yeah...well, your massage was so relaxing that I dozed off. If you didn't have such magical hands this never would have happened. Clearly the blame is all on your head."
NURSE LAURIER-
"I won't let you hold this against me. I had nothing to do with any of this!
HELLINGS-
"Relax! I won't hold against it you. You'll just have to make it up to me is all. Perhaps later you can let those magic hands of yours do their work again...if you know what I mean."
NURSE LAURIER-
"I think I'd rather jab my eyes out with an ice pick."
HELLINGS-
"Whatever. Then I guess I'll just have to blame you for me being late AND my loss."
NURSE LAURIER-
"How did I cause to lose?"
HELLINGS-
"Well I think we're all aware that the only reason Bombtrack was able to pin me was because I had a bad neck. If I were at 100%, then there would be NO WAY he could beat me! And why am I still injured? Because you evidently suck at your job!"
NURSE LAURIER-
"You know, I think you should stop making excuses and start taking responsibility for your actions. I had nothing to do with that match at all."
HELLINGS-
"You know who else didn't have anything to do with that match? Mercy. Or at least it sure looked that way. Why did he even bother showing up? If there was ever any doubt that Mercy was far past his prime then that match confirmed what we all suspected. I mean, Mercy wasn't that good to begin with so any decline in quality is a dangerous prospect at best. But me? Well I'm like a fine wine-I get better with age. Pretty soon they're going to need to come up with all new adjectives to describe just how good I am because 'amazing' or 'exceptional' just doesn't cut it any more. I've already become the one and ONLY UBERstar, and it's only a matter of time before I become something much more than that."
NURSE LAURIER-
"I don't think you should get too greedy. After all, you're already a pompous ass AND a jerk."
HELLINGS-
"Look, no one cares about Mercy these days. I don't know how he ever got a job. Perhaps there is some sort of (making quotation marks with his fingers) 'Hire a Loser' campaign going on around here, I can't say. All I know is that he doesn't deserve to be in the same ring with me once, let alone twice IN A ROW. I deserve to be facing bigger stars than this. I am the Marquee Player, the Franchise Saviour, and the Number One Money Maker and I deserve top-tier competition! Whether Mercy is a charity case, a novelty act or some sort of nostalgic throwback, the fact remains that he should get out of my way. I'm sick and tired of having to worry about Mercy. Seriously, does he have compromising pictures of someone? Does he have a cousin or something working in the main office? How does he keep getting all these chances? He doesn't deserve half of what he gets...but I guess nothing has changed."
NURSE LAURIER-
"You're saying that Mercy has never earned anything?"
HELLINGS-
"Heck no. You know the first time he won the RWW title he was practically given the belt on a silver platter? He wasn't even booked for a title match, but he got one anyway. I guess the only way Mercy can ever get anywhere in life is if someone holds his hand. Well no one's gonna hold his hand through our match at Supremacy. I'll just go in there and beat him, proving my dominance once again. But people should know by now that I am every bit as good as I say I am, so that will hardly be surprising. Heck, I'm THE Canadian Legend, people expect me to succeed! But what will really matter is that beating Mercy will expose him for the fraud that he really is. Isn't it odd that the only time people ever care about Mercy is when his name is attached to my own? He has rode my success all throughout his career and it will finally come to an end at Supremacy. I'm tired of knowing that every time I start to enjoy some success, I can expect to see Mercy in my rearview mirror, about to pounce on the opportunity to once again become a household name based on MY success!"
NURSE LAURIER-
"Oh yeah? What great success have you enjoyed lately?"
HELLINGS-
"That's just it-I should be on top of this stupid company, but instead I'm being held back by Mercy. He's like a drowning man trying to drag me under with him. But it's not gonna work. At Supremacy I will finally be able to close the chapter (The Boy snaps the copy of "A Christmas Carol" shut for emphasis) of my life that deals with Mercy. The ghosts of my past have haunted for me too long. Well I don't want to live in the past because I like to look ahead, I live in the now. And THE NOW belongs to The Boy!"
NURSE LAURIER-
"I think Mercy has got to you. I think he's in your head."
HELLINGS-
"You're here to heal my neck, not provide my with psycho-analysis, so shut up! I'm really not in the mood for insolence."
NURSE LAURIER-
"Wow, you really don't want to fight Mercy at Supremacy, huh?"
HELLINGS-
"Of course not! Mercy is, supposedly, here for one goal: to get Rob Gamble. He wants to put Rob Gamble through hell the way Rob used to torture all of us back in RWW. That's fine, more power to him. Because I really can't be bothered, I don't care to aid him in that quest...but I won't stop him either. In fact, if he WERE to get his hands on Rob, I'd probably sit back and applaud. But now his quest has taken a detour and, as always, all roads somehow lead to me. I'm not sure what I did in a former life to deserve such a fate, but I know I'm going to put an end to it at Supremacy. I'm not just going to beat Mercy, I'm going to destroy him. The man is a parasite, attaching himself to my good name and desperately trying to suck the lifeblood out of me. Well it ends now. See Mercy and Rob and Bombtrack and Stupac and whoever else can remember the good ol' days all they want...but all I ask is that they don't drag me down with them."
NURSE LAURIER-
"It sounds like you might be afraid of Mercy."
HELLINGS-
"Afraid? What's to be afraid of? I've already beat Mercy at least 3,247 times before. I know I can do it again. Besides, the man is a drunk and a whackjob. Look, if your therapist calls you every day than you obviously have issues. If you ask me The Sickness refers to his mental condition. Well instead of sucking back Jack Daniels the man should just take his brain medicine and leave me the heck alone. No, I'm not afraid of Mercy because I know that I can beat him. Can he say the same thing? Perhaps at one point in his career, but a long time has passed since then and he has not had much experience in the ring since.
Does he still have what it takes? I like a longshot as much as anyone but the safe bet is answering a big N-O to that question. So I'm definitely not afraid. I'm just tired of constantly facing the same competition-competition I've beat many times before-over and over. I understand the logic here, I do: the suits know that I am The Nielsen's Favourite Son and they know that they can throw me up against anyone and it will do huge business. Of course! Well I can humour that concept for only so long. I want to taste real competition again and Mercy is definitely not in that category. All my fans, The Boy Scouts, are getting restless; they want to see me in a meaningful match against a real opponent again. In fact, I think that if they put me up against another former RWW member again then I am just going to boycot the damn match. I'll go on strike if I have to, to ensure that my concerns do not fall upon deaf ears."
NURSE LAURIER-
"You've really gone off the deep end, you know that?"
HELLINGS-
"Look, I was reading this book here (The Boy points to "A Christmas Carol" once again) and even Scrooge only had to face ONE ghost from Christmas' past. Well I'm tired of fighting the ghosts of my past! I want to see what my future holds so that I can go on to become the most dominant force in this entire company! That's what I deserve and I won't someone like Mercy prevent that from happening. If they won't listen to me, then I'll make them pay attention. Mercy will be my example, my sacrifice. I will put an end to him and maybe then people will smarten up around here. Mercy better be ready for the fight of his life because I am not going to take it easy on him. Injured neck or not, I will make sure that he never gets in my way again! Why? Because I want to, because I CAN!"
(The Boy gets up and heads for the door)
NURSE LAURIER-
"Where are you going?"
HELLINGS-
"I have to go to the gym and train. Mercy can sit around, moping about and drinking his life away, but a superior athlete like myself has to actually prepare."
(The Boy walks out of the room, slamming the door shut.)
NURSE LAURIER-
"They really don't pay me enough for this."
(The camera focuses in on the door before the scene finally fades to black.)
