SHIELD OF DREAMS
For some reason, every time I think of this roleplay, I think of two really old video games: the Little Nemo one for NES (odd that I think of that and not the comic strip it is based off of or the film) and the Mickey Mouse game World of Illusion for Sega Genesis. At least Nemo is relevant, whereas Mickey doesn't even pertain to dreams or sleep, does it? I don't even recall playing that game either. Odd. This roleplay is fairly decent, although it didn't quite live up to what I had in mind. I found that I was having a tough time coming up with ideas for a roleplay because I was essentially competing in a rematch from the week before and it's kinda of hard to roleplay for almost the exact same match right after the first one. I mean, I had done three roleplays for the PPV match and now I had to pump out more against the same opponent? It's not the easiest thing to do on such a short turnaround because I had already pretty much said everything I wanted to say about Chris Dyson the week before. Still, I managed to get some inspiration and turned out what I think is a fairly solid roleplay. The thing with the Martin Luther King speech is so horribly offensive, yet at the same time so cheezy that it...it just works for the character; he gets to be annoying, a prick, dorky, and cocky all at once. I wanted to fit in some other great stuff about sleep and dreams, but it just wasn't coming. I really, really wanted to put something in about Rip Van Winkle, but I couldn't figure out how. Oh well. This could and should have been a bit better, so it ended up being only decent and not excellent.
REWARDS. Everyone wants to receive one, but so few of us do. After all, to be rewarded is stands to reason that we must actually accomplish something to deserve one. Or, at least, that is the way that life SHOULD work. Unfortunately, sometimes people are rewarded for doing nothing.
Take Chris Dyson for example. The man lost to me last week and now I have to face...Chris Dyson again. What did he do to deserve a second, consecutive title shot? Chris Dyson must have friends in high places because he certainly did not prove himself worthy of such an honour at NewLife.
I have had to earn everything I've got thus far in EWA. Even though you people do not want to see me succeed merely because you don't care for me as a human being, I was too good for you to ignore me completely. I understand why people don't like me, really I do; everyone hates knowing they are second best. No one likes to be shown that they are inadequate. Moreover, people certainly hate it when that fact is rubbed in their face. But that is what I do each and every week. You don't have to like it - I really don't care one way or the other - but it works for me and I'll continue to do it. Quick, how many people are wearing TWO titles right now in EWA? Just one: The Boy. That's what I call being rewarded.
Yes, I'm sure if it were up to some people around here, I would NEVER get a title shot...but you can only ignore me for so long. Eventually, people will start to ask questions. "Why is it that guy is clearly better than everyone else, yet never gets a title shot?" Personal vendettas aside, business is business and, when done poorly, it affects everyone.
Which is why I don't understand why Chris Dyson is going to be facing me once again; did I not already prove him unworthy of being in my presence? You know, it works both ways here people - eventually people are going to ask, "Why is that guy so pathetically awful, yet ALWAYS gets title shots?"
Chris Dyson pretends that he is a lot more capable than he really is. Chris Dyson wants everyone to believe that his effort at NewLife was good enough to prove that he deserves another opportunity to face me in the ring. I am sorry, where you watching the same match as everyone else?
Why is it that the superior athletes are always punished? Why is that no one just accepts that someone is better and more dominant than everyone else? An Olympic runner gets to the finish line in record time and the words "steroids" and "performance-enhancing drugs" are immediately on everyone's lips. If you win anything in sports these days, you're subjected to a drug test to prove if you really were just that much better than everyone else. Why is it so hard to accept?
Is it jealousy? I could understand that I suppose; after all, if I were you I'd want to be me too. Is it bitterness? Is it because you all know deep down inside that you'll never be able to be a winner, so this is you're only means of exacting revenge?
That's it, isn't it? Chris Dyson will get his revenge by forcing me to compete against him for several weeks in a row. What does that do? It keeps me out of more important matches, matches that I deserve to be in. Instead of being rewarded, I am being punished. Just accept your life for what it is Dyson - a pathetic attempt to feign greatness. I should be involved in World Title matches, but instead I'll be saddled with Chris Dyson forever waiting in the wings, sticking to me like my shadow just because he doesn't want to admit he is a loser. Stop dragging me down with you Dyson and waste someone else's time.
In the business world, if you "reward" your friends with exclusive contracts you get in big, big trouble. Undeserved rewards in the business world result in your name forever being attached to words like "extortion," "embezzlement," and "fraud." In the world of professional wrestling world, however, no one seems to bat an eyelash. Even though there is a grievous case of fraud going on here...and Chris Dyson is the perpetrator.
I thought that when I won the Mighty Lion Championship that I would be rewarded with a week off. In all actuality, a parade should have been thrown in my honour. Let's face facts folks - if it were not for me this company would go under. No, seriously. We all know that I am The Nielsen's Favourite Son and, without me, the ratings would bottom out, we would be without a TV deal and EWA would have to close its doors. Simply put, the people like to see excellence and there is no one better than I am. Don't believe it?
Ric Thunder, our beloved World Champion, walked out on this company shortly after winning the title the first time. Poor old Ric was so scared that he would have to face me at Squared Circle Mania that he had to run away as fast as his legs could carry him. I must ask you though: did our whole world tear apart at the seams with his exit?
We're still here, aren't we?
Instead of rewarding me, the true foundation of this entire company, for being the glue that keeps this place together, I'm getting punished with yet another nothing match against a nothing opponent. It's a great injustice. Shouldn't the Geneva Convention prevent something like this? Amnesty International?
Well, I tell you what...I'll play your game. I will take on Chris Dyson this week and I will take him on the week after that if you like. And the week after that, and the week after that, and the week after that and so on and so on. However long it takes for you to pay attention. All I ask is that remember this: I WILL destroy him. This kid is in over his head, he can't swim and I'll pull him under. You tossed him to the sharks and what is about to happen to him will not be for the faint of heart. Yes, Chris Dyson will be my message to all of EWA: give me the respect that I DESERVE...or perish. I just hope you all understand that I cannot be held responsible for this because if it were up to me, I would be facing someone who is a lot more proficient in the ring.
His blood will be on your hands.
That is your reward.

(The scene opens up inside a large, beautifully decorated bedroom. Through the windows, we can see the darkness that reveals it is late at night. The room is bathed in a soft, dim light. As the camera slowly pans from the doorway and around the room, it is obvious the occupant of this room is a very wealthy, very important individual. The furniture is ornate and it appears as though most of the items in the room are antiques. The camera pans to show the head of the bed. The large king-size bed looks as though it truly was meant for a king; the linen seems exotic and the very nature of the bed itself screams comfort. The quilted bedspread is pulled back to reveal expensive-looking silk sheets. The camera then reveals someone is at the foot of the bed. It is none other than Scott "The Boy" Hellings. He is wearing a set of designer pajamas and looks as if he is ready to go to bed. He is kneeling on the floor, his eyes closed, his head slightly bowed, and his hands clasped together as if he were actually praying.)
HELLINGS-
"Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray thee lord my soul to keep. For if I die before I wake, I pray the lord my soul to take."
(The Boy remains kneeling and slowly opens his eyes and unclasps his hands, but keeps his head down as a slight smile spreads across his lips.)
HELLINGS-
"What a wonderful little rhyme, huh? I'm sure we've all said that little spiel at one point or another in our lives. And why not? It is rather comforting, especially for young children. Only a child would be so gullible as to assume repeating a poem could actually provide you with spiritual insurance and protect you from anything bad that happens. Too bad, it's not always so easy to give yourself that sort of peace of mind, to insulate yourself from anything unpleasant. Unfortunately, as we get older, we realize that sometimes bad things will happen and there is nothing you can do about it. Take Chris Dyson for instance; surely, he knows that stepping into the ring with me a second time is a very poor career move. Yet, it appears to be what he wants. Why? Is he a masochist? Does he think he has something to prove? I don't claim to have the answers to those questions, but I do know that Chris Dyson had better be adequately prepared or our second encounter. Instead of holding press conferences and trying to act cool, why not try training for once? Your jocular nature and adolescent antics might appeal to brain-dead frat boys, but it doesn't mean anything once you step between those ropes. Granted, your training will all be for naught, but wouldn't you at least like to say you made an effort?
Instead of hanging out with Impact-X and talking a big game, why not try to do something productive so you can try to back your words up? Me, I don't need to do that because I have already proven time and time again that I am every bit as good as I claim to be. Heck, Dyson found that out firsthand last week, just like I said he would. I gotta tell you, he sure does act tough for someone who suffered defeat. Do you think you too have some sort of insurance plan, a little prayer you can recite to protect you? Hardly. Children need to say those little rhymes because they need reassurance nothing will happen to them. Aren't children led to believe that bad things can happen in your sleep? Did the hare not lose to the tortoise because he wanted to take a nap? Did Sleeping Beauty not get cursed to sleep for eternity until she was rescued? For a child such things might seem unpleasant and could lead one to believe that only bad things happen while we sleep. But this is not a fairy tale Dyson, there will be no (making quotation marks with his fingers) 'happily-ever-after.'
Slow and steady does NOT win the race, pure talent does...and I have plenty to spare. We are at most vulnerable when we sleep because we cannot defend ourselves, we cannot see what is coming. Likewise, you, and all the other monkeys in the EWA locker room, are at your most vulnerable when you enter the squared circle with your truly. The only difference is that you can see what is coming and you know what is going to happen...but you can't do anything about it.."
(The Boy gets to his feet and stretches slightly. He then sits down at the foot of the bed.)
HELLINGS-
"Have you ever heard of lucid dreams Dyson? That is where the dreamer is actually aware that they are dreaming. It's a wonderful thing too, because you can theoretically have full control over your dreams once you are aware of them. Well, Dyson, you couldn't even beat me in your dreams, lucid or not. Sometimes things are out of control, no matter what we tell ourselves. This is the situation you find yourself in now. You think you are in control, you think you have the upperhand. I don't know why that is, since you already lost to me once, but I can see that you're adamant that things are playing out exactly as you want them to. I would advise you to rethink some things through. If this is some sort of plan of yours, it is pretty pathetic. What is it that you have up your sleeve, Dyson? Are you going to send your buddies Impact-X after me?
Oh, I know you claimed that wasn't going to happen, but I would not be surprised if you got desperate between now and then and you changed your mind. Hey, it's better than going it alone, right? Well let me debunk that myth right here and now - Impact-X can come out and get involved in our match all they want, but it won't matter. Your pals Rob Faith and Freehorn? They have both tasted defeat when facing me. I am not talking about an incident that occurred long ago either, I'm talking about a match that took place just weeks ago. See, that OTHER title I have, the Warfare Title? Well I beat Rob Faith for that one. Then the following week I beat BOTH Rob and Freehorn in what was essentially a glorified handicap match. Look, I beat them both BY MYSELF. What difference will they make, honestly? I've beat the three of you! You could combine your collective skills together and you still wouldn't even be 1/27 as good as I am!"
(The Boy pauses and starts counting on his fingers, as if checking his math.)
HELLINGS-
"Yeah, that seems about right. Look, to strengthen my point, I will just note that the last time Rob Faith got together with a group of friends he was kicked to the curb. Remember the Alliance folks? Of course you don't because it is easy to forget mediocrity. But, trust me on this one, Rob Faith was a founding member. Shortly after they arrive on the soon, however, he was ditched. My point is this: if a group as awful as the Alliance didn't want Rob Faith, what does that tell you? He's nothing! So he beat Kris Cain at NewLife, big deal! All that proves is someone out there is actually worse than Rob Faith! I am sorry, but whatever ace you think you have up your sleeve is just a bluff and I'm calling it. Yes, I'm going all in so it is time to lay your cards on the table and I will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the hand you've been dealt is a losing one. You have no control over this situation; I will win because I'm that much better than you are. You have to understand that they may call me The Boy, but there is no doubt that I am The Man.
Therefore, whatever little scheme, wacky plan, or crazy caper you have been brainstorming, is useless. Forget it and go back to the drawing board. NOTHING you can do will stop me from proving once again that I am your superior. All you are doing is wasting your time by devising some battle plan. Look, all I'm saying is that we are led to believe that we should always expect the unexpected, but when you face me you can expect but just three things - pain, humiliation, and defeat. There is no way you'll beat me, no matter what you want to tell yourself."
(The Boy gets off the bed and lays down on the floor. The camera follows him and looks at him from across the opposite side of the bed. There is nothing under the bed. It is fairly dark and through the shadows The Boy's face is only barely visible).
HELLINGS-
"Sometimes little kids are afraid of the dark and fear that monsters live in their closet or under their beds. For piece of mind, they make their parents assure them they are safe. I wonder if Chris Dyson checks under his bed. Well I hope for his sake that he doesn't because it seems pretty futile. Trust me, there are far worse things out there than what lurks in the shadows. I am referring, of course, to myself. You want to feel true fear? Then step into that ring with me one more time. You were lucky you got off so easily last time...but this time you won't be so fortunate. He has the nerve to say that he didn't try hard last time? That's rich. Does anyone honestly believe that? Face facts Dyson, you tried, you gave it all your all and you still came up short. Reassure yourself all you want, but who are you really fooling? When you were a kid you could probably reassure yourself by claiming that the thing you saw in the dark was really just your mind playing tricks on you, but it doesn't work that way anymore.
There will be nothing you can do or say that will hide the fact that I am going to annihilate you Chris Dyson. This isn't like a dream where you get to wake up before you hit the ground, this is the real deal. But I can guarantee that, like Freddy Krueger, I will haunt your dreams for years to come. Unlike Freddy, you don't have to worry about me attacking you in your dreams though, because you have to face me while you're wide awake and have as much control over the situation as possible. Yes, I saw the fear in your eyes at NewLife Dyson. I saw that look of despair, that look I see in an opponent's eyes that lets me know they are admitting defeat. You didn't give it all your all? For your sake, I hope that is true. Nevertheless, it will take something more than a hard-fought effort to beat me, something I'm not even sure exists. Whatever that intangible factor is I cannot say, since I almost never lose. I know it, you know it, the whole damn world knows it! If you do find it though, count your lucky stars, bottle it, and patent it as fast as you can. But don't go heading for the patent office just yet because you still have to get through me, which is a task you have yet to master. You don't concern me though, because I know that the result of this match is a given, a foregone conclusion. How do I know? Dyson wants to pull out all the stops and he wants to make this a triple ladder match."
(The Boy scratches his head, confused.)
HELLINGS-
"Why? You couldn't win with one ladder there, what difference will it make if you had a couple more ladders and some barbwire? We can add in three, four, ten, even twenty ladders if you want Dyson! It just means I'll have a choice as to which one I want to climb up to grab my Mighty Lion Title. So what's the point? The point is that deep down inside he realizes that facing me again will ruin his career and he just watns to guarantee that he goes out with a bang! There is just one problem: I do not accept your stipulations. Before you say it, no, I am hardly afraid of you. Why should I be? I already have a victory over you! And it's not that I'm afraid of getting hurt or anything like that. What it all boils down to is this: I don't care what you want. YOU do not get to call the shots around here. I am a DOUBLE CHAMPION! I am The Marquee Player, The Franchise Saviour, and The Number One Money Maker! I do not have to take orders from anyone! I'm not a radio station I don't take requests...but I do keep the hits coming.
No, I don't need to accept any demands and especially not from a loser like you! I've said it all along, I do what I want when I want, HOW I want. So keep dreaming Dyson because your little match is not going to happen. Unless The Suits force me into this thing, it is not going to happen. However, if it does and I am contractually obligated to abide by your stipulations, just know that you should be careful what you wish for Chris. You can't put on a nightlight to protect you and you can't have mommy and daddy look under the bed or in the closet for the things that go bump in the night because THIS monster is the real deal! This monster is the same one that beat you at NewLife and the same one that will beat you at Turmoil! This monster is your worst nightmare!"
(The Boy gets to his feet and sits back down on the bed, pausing to take off his slippers.)
HELLINGS-
"Ever had one of those recurring dreams? You know, where you keep having the exact same dream over and over? Some people think dreams are really telling us something and they pay far too much of their hard-earned money to get some shrink to analyze their dreams for them. So what recurring dream do I have? Well, there is this one where I'm winning some sort of golden object. Some people believe that if you are handling gold in your dreams, it is a sign of your superiority and it means you are going to be quite successful. And, yes, that definitely seems true as I am certainly very successful these days and, not coincidentally, I own a lot gold right now. But, and this is very important, if you lose gold? It means you have missed out one the greatest opportunity of your life because you were careless. Or maybe just inept. Notice something? This is true of you Dyson. I guess maybe this whole dream interpretation thing isn't that bad after all! Except this is not a dream, this is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I won at NewLife because I excel at everything I do. Do not forget - I am THE Canadian Legend and The One and Only UBERstar! Dyson, you failed because it just was not meant to be. Certainly, that match, and this subsequent encounter at Turmoil, are the greatest opportunities of your life: imagine, a nobody like you beating someone as dominant and as impressive as me. Well that sort of thing only happens in the movies, but real life is far less forgiving. In reality, the cream rises to the top, the best people always win, and the weakest ones will never improve. No, Chris Dyson, this match won't give you the result you're looking for; all this match will prove is that I deserve better. Losing to me will become a habit for you, it will become your recurring nightmare. It will feel like a dream because it will be all so incomprehensible - how you got to have ONE match against someone like me, let alone a rematch, how inexplicably dominant I am, and how poor a decision it was to keep the company's hottest commodity involved with such a nobody - but you'll be wide awake.
Ever heard of night terrors? Where people just scream and scream all night long? You'll experience the same sort of thing, the only difference is you'll be completely conscious of what is happening and the screams you hear will be the result of your own, crippling pain. You actually think that the title is something you DESERVE? How? Why? Because you had one match...a match you lost? Fact it, I am already a champion. If anyone deserves to wear this title, it is me. Stop daydreaming Chris, because everyone saw NewLife and they saw me, not you, winning that match. That is why this match will just end up like the last one and why you should quit while you are ahead. But if you really want to go through with this, I will grant you your wish. Just don't expect to be happy with the end result."
(The Boy reaches over to his bedside table, pulls out a book, and starts flipping through it a bit.)
HELLINGS-
"I love to read every night before I go to bed. Currently I am going though a fascinating work by Rene Descartes. Who is that you ask? Well, he was a French intellectual; a philosopher, mathematician...he pretty much did it all. He came up with all sorts of great theories, but he has one that I personally enjoy: methodological scepticism. Basically, Descartes said that if what we are perceiving in our dreams is not actually real, despite the fact that it feels completely real, then we can never be certain if all this, our reality as we know it, is just a dream or not. How can one differentiate between what is real and what isn't? How do we truly know when we are awake? Is any of this real? Well I know of a few things that are certainly true: the gold that I possess is very real, my superior ability is not made up, and I know that Chris Dyson is going to lose to me for a second straight match. He claims he has what it takes, but like Descartes, I'm sc0eptical. As you're suffering defeat yet again, you might try to wake yourself up, but it will be no use. Face it Dyson - you're not in my league. You're persistent, I will give you that, but that is the only credit you deserve. I don't care if you claim to respect me because I never got into wrestling for respect. I did this for one reason and one reason only - to win.
Fortunately, I am quite good at it, which is a good thing too, because I would hate to disappoint all my fans, all The Boy Scouts out there. That is why I am not afraid to do what it takes or to say what needs to be said in order to accomplish my goals. It's not about honour because all that matters is winning. You, I know your type, you have a sense of morality, don't you? It will be your undoing, believe me. And your fast and steady descent begins at Turmoil. It won't be long now before you'll find yourself, awake at night, unable to sleep as you replay every moment leading up to our matches. You'll wonder if you went wrong somewhere. I'll spare you the trouble, your mistake was ever attempting to face me at all. Really, your first and biggest mistake was entering EWA to begin with. Why enter the lion's den when the pride is stirring? But enter you did - twice - and it is about to get ugly.
I tolerated your existence before because you amused me. Now I am angry that I am being held back by facing you twice in a row. You don't deserve to be in my presence and I will see to it that you'll never be able to tarnish my legacy ever again. And if I were you, I'd be very, very afraid and approach with caution. Thus far, I have done just about every single thing I have ever said I would do in EWA. If I wasn't scaring off our World Champion, I was making guys like Carnivore quit, or pinning people like Rob Faith for championships. All of which I predicted, all of which came true. Consider your next move very carefully Dyson because it might be your last."
(The Boy then slams the book shut and places it back on the bedside table. He then crawls in between the sheets.)
HELLINGS-
"You know, all this talk of dreams makes me think of another great man - Martin Luther King Jr. King is famous for his 'I have a dream speech.' Well, like King I too have a dream."
(The Boy pauses and clears his throat.)
HELLINGS-
"I have a dream. I have a dream that one day this company will rise up and live out the true meaning of my personal creed: that all men are NOT created equal. There is only one Scott Hellings and NO ONE can ever beat him! I have a dream, that one day everyone who has lost to me in the past will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. Fortunately, I might add that thanks to my Red and White Ribbon Campaign, that dream is becoming a reality too. And I have a dream that one day the rookies of EWA will not be judged by their previous accomplishments, but by what they can do in the ring against me - relatively very little. I have a dream today! That one day the superior athletes in EWA, such as myself, will be given opponents that are better than Chris Dyson! I have a dream where the real talent will get the rewards they rightfully deserve! I have a dream where inferiority is no longer tolerated or celebrated! And I have a dream that EWA fans will be freed from watching more and more garbage matches with bottom of the barrel talent like Michael Landry! Let freedom ring from the EWA Arena! And then all of the winners of the world, like myself, will be able to say in unison, 'free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty we are free at last!'"
(The Boy pauses and looks off in the distance for a minute, before coming down from his rant).
HELLINGS-
"Until then, I'll just have to settle for beating up on pathetic individuals like Chris Dyson. Bring your old Impact-X buddies if you must, but they won't make a difference. Get The Suits to force me into your precious little triple ladder match if you so desire...but it won't matter either. You have to recognize how the way things work around here. There is a definite hierarchy, I am at the top of it..., and you're down at the bottom. That is why I was able to win at NewLife - because I was already at the top and didn't have far to climb. You can't beat me, so just deal with it."
(The Boy then lies down and turns off the lamp on the bedside table, cloaking the room in darkness. The room is dark for a moment before the light turns back on and The Boy sits back up in bed.)
HELLINGS-
"You should go find yourself someone of Native American descent and ask to borrow a dream catcher because, after I'm done with you, I will prove to be the nightmare you can't get out of your head Chris Dyson. I will give you a serious case of insomnia because I'll beat you so bad, you'll be too afraid to sleep for fear that I'll come back to finish the job. Sleep with one eye open and say your prayers because you have got me mad and you are facing one monumental task ahead of you. Hopefully after this one is over you'll begin to see that you're not good enough, you were never good enough, and you'll never be good enough. Maybe then you'll leave me in peace so I can go on and continue my dominance of EWA. But first, first I have to defeat you...again. And just so you know, no matter what you might want to believe, that Mighty Lion Championship is coming back home with ME at the end of the night. Why? Because I want to, because I can! Sweet dreams Chris."
(The Boy then turns the lamp off once again as the room goes dark a second time, as the scene finally comes to an end.)
