ewa:
THE BOY CHI MINH TRAIL
This ended up being my final roleplay in EWA. The fed was so surrounded by turmoil, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did (how many people were in charge of it in the few months it was open, really?). Still, I had a lot of fun there. I was enjoying this feud with Chris Dyson somewhat, but I also felt like it needed something. I thought that just a straight singles match was a boring way to continue the feud. At least make it a street fight or something. This roleplay took a lot of research and I felt that I didn't quite do enough with it. My dad's a big Vietnam nut, so that's where the idea came from, but like I said I could have done more with it.
The idea of attacking the storyline with Chris' mother was great because it got me cheap heat really. I used to be apprehensive about doing that sort of thing because, even though it is just a fantasy storyline, some people get unexpectedly sensitive to these things and tend to overreact. No one told me I crossed the line though. I think that, as a heel, The Boy needs to cross the line though. I've always thought of and designed The Boy as a classic heel, a true heel's heel and that sort of thing is really what it's all about. Still, there are some good lines here and a decent concept. Too bad EWA had to just fizzle out.
(The scene opens up with a tight shot on Scott "The Boy" Hellings' face. We cannot see where the scene is taking place, but there are some audio cues; we know that he is outdoors and that there are other people around. It is definitely a public setting. We can tell it must be early in the morning because, even though the noises of a city can be heard in the background, the ambience is fairly subdued, suggesting that it is before rush hour traffic.)
HELLINGS-
"What will be your legacy? With EWA's first Hall of Fame inductions about to be announced, it is a question that has been on everyone's lips as of late. For some people, a legacy is all-important, and for others it's more of an afterthought. Some people don't even consider the question until they are closer to their end of days. Some devote their whole lives to their legacy. Me, I don't need to worry about it. We all know by now that I am THE Canadian Legend and The One and Only UBERstar, so it's not as if I have to worry. Add in my accomplishments here in EWA and I would say my legacy has been well established. For others, like Chris Dyson, they have only begun their quest. Unfortunately, there is one thing most people fail to comprehend when discussing legacies. You see, there can be good legacies..."
(The camera finally zooms out to reveal that The Boy is standing in front of the Vietnam War Memorial, otherwise known as "The Wall" in Washington, DC. He is dressed like a typical tourist and has a camera around his neck.)
HELLINGS-
"...and you can have negative legacies. No one looks back on Vietnam fondly because it was a mistake. Likewise, no one is going to remember Chris Dyson's so-called legacy as a great one, as I will personally see to it that his legacy is one of pain, humiliation, and more importantly, defeat. He and Michael Landry lost to me at NewLife and now he is set to lose to me one more time. That's not the stuff legends are made of. Make no mistake about it either, Chris Dyson WILL lose. Like the American army in Vietnam, Chris Dyson is in over his head. Sure, he thinks he can win but the harder he tries, his problems are only exacerbated. Simply put, the longer America stayed in Vietnam, the worse it got and the more times Chris Dyson faces me, the worse it will be for him. There is a plus side though. See, while we have a habit of forgetting about our veterans - the World War II Memorial has only recently even been considered - I never forget my victims.
That is why I established my Red and White Ribbon Campaign, to help those who have suffered career-crippling losses to me in the ring get back on their feet. Yes, Chris Dyson will need such a service too, because two straight losses will finally make it abundantly clear to the world that he does not belong in the ring with someone of my calibre. Once that charade has been played out, what else is there? What else can he hope for? The fans won't want to see him; they won't want to pay their hard-earned money to see someone who has been proven to be a loser! But it's okay, Chris, because I understand your plight. I understand it because I have seen it countless times before. Granted, there is no shame in losing to someone like me...but people only tolerate mediocrity for so long before they find themselves longing for success. Why do you think all my fans, all The Boy Scouts, love to cheer me on? They enjoy watching someone who is actually competent!
Chris Dyson is out of his league and I will prove it for the second week in a row. After that, his legacy will be one of failure. I am sorry Chris, the truth hurts I'm sure. But you have to realize that you brought this on yourself. I mean I know I didn't want to face you again because I knew it wasn't worth my time! This must have been your idea! Someone like me needs to be in bigger matches involving competitors who are, at least, adequate. Thanks to you though, I am saddled with yet another pointless match against you. There is just a slight problem with
your little scheme because you'll be the one taking the loss and you'll be the one with the losing legacy after it is all said and done. Whereas I will be the one turning in yet another Hall of Fame-worthy performance!"
(The Boy pauses and cups his hand to his ear, as if straining to hear something that is not there.)
HELLINGS-
"What's that, you say? You don't think I am worthy of being in the Hall? Well, let's consider the facts for a moment, shall we? First off, I am both the International AND Mighty Lion Champion! I am the first AND ONLY person in this company to hold two titles AT THE SAME TIME. No one else has done that. Not Ric Thunder, not Krissy Delight, not Mike Battise...no one! Also, I have yet to lose a match in singles competition. That's right; no one has EVER beaten me one-on-one! That isn't a legacy worthy of the Hall of Fame? You know what? I understand it, I really do. You see, I understand that all of you people are just jealous of me. Heck, I can't blame you either; if I were you I'd want to be me too. You also don't like me either. You don't like me because of my dominance and because my personality rubs some of you the wrong way. Basically, you don't like me because I say what I want, when I want, to who I want. And I do what I want and, most importantly, I deliver on my promises.
Did I not tell Chris Dyson and Michael Landry I would beat them at NewLife? Did I not accomplish that? It’s hard being right all the time because eventually people star to resent you for it. Face the facts people - I am your superior. No one likes to choke down those words, I understand that, but you cannot deny it. You know what though? I am totally fine with not being considered for the Hall of Fame. In fact, I PREFER it. You want to know why? Because it speaks more about my legacy than a token induction ever could. It tells me that you people KNOW I am better than you are and it frustrates all of you so damned much that you just do not want to admit it. You would rather not spit out the words 'you're better than me,' so to get back at me, you deny me what I have rightfully earned. Therefore, your silence speaks more than a nomination ever could...and I love it. I told every single person here in EWA from Day One that I would prove that I was the best damn wrestler this company will ever see and so many of you scoffed at me and denied it.
You can't deny it now though, can you? You could turn a blind eye to me if you want, but it will just force my hand and I'll have to MAKE you realize it! Countless others before you thought that way too - and came up short. Chris Dyson had confidence - and he lost too. My legacy cannot be denied, even if you don't like it. Granted, the Hall of Fame will always be a joke as long as I am not in there, but my exclusion is fine by me because it only justifies everything I have ever said. I know it, you know it, the whole damn world knows it! So I am fine with the snub, really I am. See I did not get into this business to make friends. No, I don't need admiration, I don't need respect, all I need is success.
Fortunately, I've got a knack for winning. Call it natural, god-given talent, call it superior skills - call it whatever you want! But you just better remember to call me what I am: champion!"
(The Boy pauses to look at the long list of names on the memorial.)
HELLINGS-
"Look at all these names. It's a shame that so many had to give their lives, isn't it? It reminds me of my opponent. Yes, poor Chris Dyson. I don't know if you heard yet, but he just lost his mother. His mother, a very brave woman, just lost her battle with cancer. Chris? I would just like to say...I don't care. No disrespect to the dead or anything, it is just that I don't care what you've been through. Do you think I will take pity on you? Do you think I will go easy on you just because you are a little upset right now? Not going to happen. Hopefully, this will teach you that you have to leave your personal life behind if you want to succeed in this business. Chris, you should have never let anyone know about your mother because now I have a weakness I can exploit.
And, whether you or anyone else likes it or not, I WILL exploit it. I will do whatever it takes to walk away with both of my titles securely in my possession! In fact, Chris, you are going about this all wrong. You are approaching this match in the worst possible manner. Not only did you let the world see you cry your eyes out over your mother's death and expose your weakness, but then you keep going on and on about how you respect me. Don't you get it? You're just stoking the fire, Chris! You're letting everyone know that you are weak, vulnerable, and a pushover. It is letting me see that, whether you're even aware of it consciously or not, you are already admitting defeat by saying those things. You are surrendering and eagerly signing that peace treaty by speaking positively about me. Sure, you try to get yourself riled up by trying to say I'm dumb because of things I said - and by the way, my point wasn't that you were calling press conferences, but rather that you were wasting valuable preparation time at them - but it's to no avail. You're like the lion who has been taken into captivity and, upon returning to the wild, can’t cut it anymore. Instead of possessing that killer instinct, your eyes betray you and reveal that you actually have the heart of a kitten instead of the hunger of the King of the Jungle.
What do I mean? I mean that you've lost your edge Chris...if you ever had one to begin with. Yes, you insist that it is I talk a big game, but I believe I've earned it, don't you? What about you though? So far, the most memorable thing you have done is read a note from your dead mother. My legacy is set in stone and that is why they call me The Marquee Player, The Franchise Saviour, and The Number One Money Maker! Yes, I have established a winning legacy and that trend will most certainly continue at Turmoil. You, on the other hand, you will establish a losing legacy. After all, when you're not losing matches, you're losing loved ones. Your mother was the lucky one Chris, because she won't have to live with the shame of being attached to your name anymore!"
(The Boy then looks to the heavens, as if looking for some sort of sign from Chris Dyson's mother, or possibly out of fear of being struck down for his despicable comments.)
HELLINGS-
"Vietnam became such a contentious issue that people were forced to protest en masse. Is it any wonder? Once knowledge of the Pentagon Papers became public, it was clear that even some US officials didn't believe that victory was feasible or possible in Vietnam. Not only that, but you just need to look at the long list of names on this memorial; these are the names of all that had to suffer the consequences of the war. And what did it gain? Unfortunately, sometimes people just do things that are simply not logical. Sometimes, people can't walk away. Chris Dyson should take note because he is certainly a card-carrying member of that group. Dyson, getting in the ring with me a second time will be your own personal Vietnam because you will gain nothing from it! What do you even think you can accomplish? Even if, heaven forbid, you actually somehow STOLE a victory and won the title, well...there is at least ten other guys and gals here in EWA that could take it away from you with both hands tied behind their back.
You're not fooling anyone, so drop the act; we all know that you don't have what it takes. If you are not going to listen to me, at least pay attention to that little, nagging voice in the back of your head that tells you what you always feared was true - that you are simply not good enough. I have seen countless others like you before and they all had to do things the hard way. Look, you people have to learn that you need to check your pride at the door when you face me because I have enough for both of us. And I also have the talent of 27 normal men so there is no reason even allowing yourself to imagine the possibility of winning. Accept a pessimistic point of view now and the loss won't be so bad. Optimism might be practical for some people in some situations, but when you're in the ring with me, the only thing you can be even somewhat optimistic about is that your inevitable defeat will come quickly."
(The Boy pauses to snap a few photos).
HELLINGS-
"Yes, Vietnam was very unpopular and it forced many people to lash out. What a wonderful concept protesting is, huh? Don’t like the way things are going? Go out there and complain until someone changes things to suit your needs. Well, there's something I would like to protest against: why am I being forced to face Chris Dyson again? Why twice in a row? First, I had to deal with both he and Michael Landry and NOW I've got Dyson again! People, I deserve better. Granted, you'll never be able to find someone better than me - they may call me The Boy but there is no doubt that I am The Man - but at least get someone better than a Dyson or a Landry. These two guys are trying to make a name for themselves and it just isn't working.
How much longer will my career suffer this indignity? I hold not one, but TWO titles and I deserve talent that at least deserves to be in the same ring as me. Is it that hard? Dyson and Landry didn't deserve their shot at the Mighty Lion Championship to begin with...so why is Dyson getting another opportunity? Like an army getting its battleplan from the general, I think someone needs to explain to The Suits around here who these things work. It seems like since I arrived on the scene here in EWA others have got opportunities they did not deserve. But me? I practically had to kill myself to get where I am today. Whether you want to admit it or not, the truth is that I have earned everything I have received. Moreover, let's not forget that it isn't just that I do something to earn my shots, but unlike Chris Dyson, I do not squander opportunities - I make the most of them. You don't win one, let alone TWO championships, by not making the most of your chances. Dyson is an embarrassment and I do not appreciate being the one dragged down with him. Jealously or not, this is just cruel. It is cruel to give Dyson this false hope and it is cruel to deny me the spotlight that I so rightfully deserve.
If it weren't for me, you people would all be out of work by now. Face it, I am The Nielsen's Favourite Son and, without me, there would be no ratings. No ratings means no TV contracts and that means no paycheques coming in. Each and every week, more and more people tune in to see me because, every so often, the people like to watch a winner. I am part of an ever-growing Cultural Phenomenon and you can't deny it. Well I guess I'll have to punish you all for you insolence and disrespect. My message will be Chris Dyson, his crippled body the exclamation point I need to make you all sit up and give me my due notice. Chris Dyson twice in a row? Hell no, it won't go! Make no mistake about it, I am protesting this match, but I'm not going to lodge a formal complaint. And I won't need signs, I won't need to chant, and I won't need to march. My protest will come in the form of a hospital bill, the recipient of the services being Mr. Dyson.
Then, once you see what I am capable of, you might being to realize that it is wise to ensure that you always give me what I want. Keeping me unhappy is a very poor business move, one that will affect you all. You are about to see what I mean and, once again, I will deliver on my promises. Just like I do every week! I don't care how many careers I have to destroy because it's not my life that's getting ruined and it's not my fault - I didn't book the matches and I can't honestly help being this good - but it doesn't mean I'll think twice about doing what is necessary to get the attention that I DEMAND."
(The Boy shakes his head, as if upset or baffled with something.)
HELLINGS-
"You know what else I don't get? It's my understanding that Michael Landry wants another crack at the Mighty Lion Championship too. Hey, kid, not only did you lose once already, but you weren't even good enough to be considered for this week's rematch. What does that tell you? See, just like Dyson will try to live up to his mother's legacy or some garbage like that, Michael Landry has to walk in the footsteps of his father. Those are big shoes to fill. The question remains though: why me? Why do you people insist on trying to make a name against yourself by going up against me? Granted, it's a sound theory - facing the very best to become a household name - but that theory is tragically flawed.
I don't think you're taking into account the fact that you have to actually BEAT me. And we all know that's not going to happen! Look, boys, stop shooting for the moon right away! Take some time to stop and smell the roses! Start of small and build yourself up before you try to go after the top guys! Do something to deserve your shots at least! Oh, and Landry? If you're trying to challenge me to some sort of match, the answer is a great big 'NO.' You have done nothing to earn it yet so I refuse to acknowledge your pathetic request. Like I told Dyson, I don't play by anyone's rules but my own. Besides, I think I've deserved it by now, have I not? That's the luxury of being a proven winner boys - something you'll probably never get to experience."
(The Boy holds up a finger, as if he just remembered something important.)
HELLINGS-
"You know, there's a wonderful saying that notes 'Those who forget the past are condemned to relive it.' I believe this is true; some would argue that the current Iraq conflict is this generation's Vietnam. Whether or not that is true, I can't say, but I do know that Chris Dyson is about to find out that he too is fighting a losing war. He too will find out that he is condemned to repeat the past, which means that he will have to lose to me once again.
Look, we all make mistakes. Granted, I'm talking in generalities here since everything I do is absolutely perfect, but stick with me here. We all make mistakes - so that we can learn from them. We do not make mistakes so we can keep trying again and again, failing over and over. That (making quotation marks with his fingers) 'never say die' mentality can only carry you so far in life before you hit a brick wall named Scott Hellings. Whoever told you to 'try, try again' was just toying with you to be cruel; you can't beat me and you never will. Chris Dyson, you and Michael Landry already found that out at NewLife...why make matters worse?
Like I said, you have to learn from history and no one knows that better than Rob Faith. He did the same thing as you: he thought that, after losing to me, he could settle the score. It didn't quite work out for him and it certainly won't be any different here. Yes, I know you don't care how many times I beat Rob Faith but the point is that he was in the same boat as you and it didn't work out according to plan for him either. The point is there is a precedent. No, I'm not living on the success of my past accomplishments Dyson, I am going out there and making new ones each and every week…which is more than can be said for you. Yes, just like Vietnam veterans have terrible flashbacks of the atrocities they witnessed in Vietnam, I'm sure Chris Dyson will meet with an overwhelming sense of deja vu when he enters the ring with me once again. I'm sure the painful memories will all come flooding back to him and the terror will take over and render him motionless. You see it is not about ladders this time around - no matter what Chris Dyson wants - and there is no intangible factor like Michael Landry involved. This time it is just you and me and the squared circle. The odds are not in your favour and you would be well advised to pull out and retreat now. Seriously, there is still time, so get out while you still can, quit while you are ahead. Take a page out of the playbook of many Americans during the Vietnam War...run away. Just like they dodged the draft and headed for greener pastures in my homeland of Canada, you too could turn back and no one would ever accuse you of being a coward. It is called common sense and if I were you, I would take that particular detour instead of heading down the road toward failure once again.
You see, the problem for you is that I do not follow the Rules of Engagement and I can promise you that facing me again will only result in your undoing. Those who forget the past truly are condemned to repeat it Chris Dyson...and the scenes of your two consecutive beatings will haunt your memories for years to come unless you get out now. It's just like how the conflict in Vietnam drastically altered the landscape of the country for decades - the effect of Agent Orange were felt by destroying plant life and poisoning all forms of life, as well as cause all sorts of diseases. You will experience it too. It's called cause and effect: The Cause if The Boy and the Effect is your unemployment. Look, if you can't be bothered saving yourself, at least do this for me. Like I said, I deserve better and that fact should be abundantly clear to all by now. Stop holding the superior back and move on to fighting those of lesser talent, say someone like Jordan Lindsey or Axl. Regardless, just get out of my way...or I'll knock you right over - again!"
(The Boy turns to leave, but stops suddenly. He then slowly turns to face the camera once again.)
HELLINGS-
"Dig in and get ready for battle Chris Dyson because this is war! You might want to start planning your retreat right now because, just like Vietnam, there is no possible way you can win. But our confrontation is not about containment, expansion, foreign policy, or anything else. All it comes down to is the Mighty Lion Championship, the very same title that is in my possession right now. The very same title that I won by beating both you and Michael Landry at NewLife. You have obviously not learned from your mistakes though and it will cost you. I deserve to be in better, more prominent matches with opponents with greater star power, but I guess I'm stuck with you for now.
That's fine, but you need to know I won't accept your surrender and I don't take prisoners. This is a suicide mission Dyson, so be prepared to be disappointed with the result...again. Just like Edwin Starr noted that war was good for nothing, it is likewise pointless for me to face you again. Still, someone granted the match and now you and you alone will have to face the repercussions. You can't win and you won't win because you are just good enough. Face it - you're out of your league here Dyson. I'm the fully decorated officer and you're about to be dishonourably discharged. Like me, hate me, I don't care. The bottom line is that I will STILL be the Mighty Lion Champion after Turmoil! Why? Because I want to, because I can!"
(The Boy then walks over to The Wall and places one of his Red and White Ribbons before it as he walks off. The camera zooms in tight on the ribbon, which has a label attached to it that reads, "Chris Dyson: August 25, 2006." The scene then finally fades to black.)
