* General Note: Dioxin causes expensive disabilities like ADD/ADHD, diabetes and cancer |. Support incentives to eliminate endocrine disruptors like dioxin and save | $12,900 / year / household | on unnecessarily high indirect and direct medical costs, Medicare and private medical insurance, disability taxes and extra income taxes to make up for taxes not paid by unnecessarily disabled people. The solution is to provide 100% tax grants for dioxin etc. elimination using "taxes generated by industry." |
DIOXINS A Bethune School playground with 2,780,000 times level that causes "Cognitive Deficits" in fetuses?...... ======================== Jacksonville Florida Bethune School Yard dirt samples (0" to 3") show high levels of mixed chemicals classified with dioxin toxicity. Dioxin is much more toxic than lead. The Public Health Assessment Document (Reference 1) says that the School yard TEF dioxin is 350 times the value of the [maximum] "Screening Value" for TEF Dioxin. This is telling but does not give the whole story. The actual levels of dioxin are horrible considering research on "cognitive deficits" by dioxin (Reference 2) and recent research on the Gulf War Illness related to fine dust transport of toxins directly through lung tissue into organs. (Reference 3) TOXICITY SAFETY FACTORS ======================== Many independent scientists want a toxicology safety factor better than 1/100 toxin dose of the lowest level that causes any serious adverse condition. However, for ease of understanding, the following uses an example of 1/10 of an unsafe dose. HOW UNSAFE IS THIS PLAYGROUND DIRT? --------------------------------- The following shows how to calculate a ratio of "toxicity" for playground dirt, residential area dirt and area "behind the fence" at Bethune School as compared to an unsafe level: e.g. Amount of TEF dioxin in soil (Reference 1) divided by amount noted for "cognitive deficits" (Reference 2) divided by a very minimum safety factor of 1/10 th. (Note, there has been no safe minimum level of dioxin found but the ratios of toxicity below are based on about 1 part per trillion dioxin for obvious "cognitive deficits.") Results, we have a playground with 2,780,000 times that level that causes "Cognitive Deficits"in fetuses. E.g. Pregnant mother is on a dry playground with her older child and she gets fine dust exposure that passes directly through her lung tissue into organs and also passes dioxin to her fetus. E.g. Pregnant teacher is on a dry playground with her students and she gets fine dust exposure that passes directly through her long tissue into organs and passes dioxin to her fetus. There are reasons that Duval County fails to graduated 52% 9 Th graders from high school. Dioxins are also linked to diabetes and porphyria sometimes occurring 30 years after exposure. Diabetes is doubling each 10 years and currently cost $1.3 Trillion for existing patients over their lifetime. Each Medicare diabetic patient costs about $90,000. Social Security Disability, lost taxes and lost productivity probably triple that cost. One can clean up a lot of toxic waste sites and can build a lot of schools for that kind of money. I personally consider the dirt so toxic that I would personally prefer to wear a hazardous waste suit if on the Bethune School Grounds. (revised 10/29/2001) Calculations: ========================= Find Dioxin Levels in Parts per Trillion (ppt) because dioxin damage is known at about 1 ppt: Bethune School Ground: ---------------------------------- From Reference 1: 0.35 (milligram TEQ Dioxin / Kg soil) = 0.35 1/1000 gram / 1000 g soil (Convert to ppm) = 0.350 1/1,000,000 = 0.350 ppm (parts per million) = 0.350 ppm x (1000 ppb / 1ppm) (Convert to ppb) = 350 ppb (parts per million) = 350 ppb x (1000 ppt / 1ppb) (Convert to ppt) = 350,000 ppt (parts per trillion) --------------------------------- Residences in area of Bethune School: --------------------------------- From Reference 1, 0.800 (microgram/Kg soil) = 0.800 1/1,000 gram / 1000 g soil (Convert to ppm) = 0.800 1/1,000,000 = 800 ppm (parts per million) = 0.800 ppt x (1000 ppb/1ppm) (Convert to ppb) = 800 ppb (parts per billion) = 800 ppb x (1000 ppt / 1 ppb) (Convert to ppt) = 800,000 ppt (parts per trillion). -------------------------------- Reference Toxic Level Target to Avoid (To be less than) -------------------------------------------- Calculate TCDD dioxin level with safety factor of 10 to prevent fetal "cognitive deficits." From Reference 2: 1.26 ng / Kg/d / (10 safety factor) = 0.126 ppt TCDD Dioxin ....to be less than 0.126 ppt TCDD with only a 10 x safety factor (Note: 100 x Safety Factor is better) -------------------------------------------- Toxicity Levels: -------------------------------------------- School Yard Toxicity Level: 350,000 / 0.126 = 2,780,000 times level that causes "Cognitive Deficits" in fetuses. Residences in Area Toxicity Level: 800,000 / 0.126 = 6,350,000 times level that causes "Cognitive Deficits" Fenced Area of School Toxicity Level: 1,400,000 / 0.126 = 11,000,000 times level that causes "Cognitive Deficits" -------------------------------------------- References: ======================= Reference 1 --------------------------------- Bethune Elementary School and surrounding "site" Public Health Assessment for Brown' Dump Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida CERCLIS NO. Latest Gulf illness suspect: sand; Army doctor says it acted as carrier for multiple agents via IntellX March 06, 1999 NewsReal's IndustryWatch. The Cincinnati Enquirer (Copyright 1999) CNNFN; chemical industry. "It {fine-sand] actually increases the effect of the chemical agent. It makes an unchallenged delivery to the target organs," Col. Korenyi-Both said. "And it is completely invisible; no one will recognize it as a chemical agent." An unusual fine-grain sand that covers much of the Persian Gulf region plays a key role in the mysterious diseases that affect thousands of veterans eight years after the Gulf War, an Army doctor says. Most people recovered within a few days [from dust], but the strange illness stayed on Col. Korenyi-Both's mind. He sent bags of sand home as souvenirs. After the war, his son, who was working for NASA, showed Col. Korenyi-Both some electron micrographs of the sand. He saw that the tiny particles were covered with nooks and crannies. Further study showed that other agents and microbes could attach to the silicon particles, in effect becoming "dusty agents." "The Bedouins have a disease called 'desert lung syndrome.' The symptoms are the same," he said. "The sand is bioactive by itself." The fine particles not only attack the lungs, they actually can penetrate into the bloodstream, where they circulate virtually forever, he said. "It will lower your immune system, leaving you open to whatever hits you from the outside world," he said. Worse, later research revealed that chemical weapons bonded to the sand became even more dangerous. "Like a good soldier, I submitted it for clearance. And I received clearance," Col. Korenyi-Both said. "Then the clearance officer disappeared, never to be seen again. Subsequent publications were denied for two years." Now, he said, researchers are seeking him out to discuss his theory.
