Secret Society

Freemasonry is often considered a secret society – but by virtue of the
information used in this web page, it clearly is not. The distinction that Masons
like to make is simple – they regard themselves as a society with secrets.(Claudy, 1949)

__________

In Twin Peaks, this is paralleled by The Book House Boys.

Like the Freemasons, the town is fully aware of their presence,
but know little of the details about their gatherings and activities.
When something bad is a-brewing, they, with varying success,
go and take care of it. Here is a piece of dialogue offered by Sheriff Truman
in Episode 17 when he invites Cooper to join: "The Bookhouse Boys patch. We
all carry it. I talked to everybody. We feel you're one of us now."

The symbol of The Book House Boys can be found on their patch –
which quite obviously draws from Mason symbols. First is the
circular shape.

Then there is the incorporation of a tree. In Freemasonry, wood is
the initial building block – it is the original source for tools
and materials, and is thus held in high regard. (Claudy, 1949)

The last icon on the patch is a sword. At every Mason meeting and ceremony,
swords are present. They represent justice, truth and firmness. The double
edge signifies the protection and the pain that a sword can bring. Much like
the double edge of The Brotherhood – they are each others strongest protectors,
as well as strongest punishers. ("Masonic Swords...," Internet)
