For the last fifteen years, I have lived in Southern California. This year we have had a lot of rain but my friends cannot envision what a lot of rain really means. My husband, a native Californian, says that he never knew what rain was until he moved to Houston.
There are two famous weather women in Houstons recent past. I remember Hurricane Alicia. It was August 18, 1983. The storm formed quickly. Alicia became a Category 3 Hurricane. The eye of the storm passed over the city. Everything became calm when the eye passed over our house but the wind came quickly again. The storm caused two billion dollars in damage and 22 people died as a result of the hurricane. If you have never experienced one hundred mile per hour winds, I suggest that you make sure you never are in the position that you do. The wind was so strong that the water came into our house through the bricks which unfortunately were too porous.
It was June 6, 2001, Tropical Storm Allison rolled into the city. In terms of rainfall, Hurricane Alicia was nothing in comparison to Allison which was just a Tropical Storm. Allison brought record rainfall to the city. Allison came and then left and went back into the Gulf of Mexico gained strength and came right back. The storm caused over four billon dollars in damage and at least 35 deaths. TNT recently made a movie about Allison entitled 14 Hours.
