We have all heard the phase Remember the Alamo but it was the Battle of San Jacinto that should be remembered. Sam Houston immediately took control of the Texian army after the fall of the Alamo and retreated with the army to the site of the Battle of San Jacinto. On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston and his rebel forces defeated General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Texas won its independence from Mexico.
After the battle, Sam Houston became the first regularly elected president of the newly formed Republic of Texas. The town of Houston was born. Houston served as the seat of government for the newly founded Republic of Texas from 1837 to 1839.
