Chapter 5

"Why do I always get volunteered to go run errands?"

Mateo complained outwardly, but yet mostly to himself as he strolled down the old cobble stone streets, in the direction of the Zaybin, the weapon and potion shop the Cathedral owned. It was built in an older part of a the city, a small family had been running it for the Cathedral for about 50 years now. Behind Mateo, followed Yavie, who offered to walk with him, but much to her displease, had to wear his large cloak to hide herself, even though Aki was in close following distance. Mateo held open the door for Yavie and soon followed her in.

"Niras? Alora?"

Mateo's voice echoed through the shop before a young girl with short, curly brunette locks peered her head from the back room door way.

"Mateo! Yavie! What are you two doing here?"

She asked as she moved from the back. Her crinkly, long blue skirt following slowly behind her.

"The Diospada is taking a small trip and we were wondering if you could make us some white potions... Oh! and some maya potions too?"

Alora gave the tall boy a nod as her and Yavie separated from their hug.

"I would be more than happy to do so."

Suddenly a head popped out from the back, his bushy moss brown hair covering his eyes, and drooping over most of his facial features.

"Ah! Mateo, My friend! I have something for you!"

The head vanished and some loud clanging was heard from the scrap metal falling to the floor in the shuffle. About a minute later, he returned with a long broad sword that had a slightly white glow to it.

"It's a holy/shadow attributed broad sword. Take it with you and test it out, ok?"

Mateo nodded, taking the sword from him with a single hand, where the other had to hold it using two hands. His blue hues looked over the blade, the silver metal shimmering from the light entering through the windows.

"Thank you Niras."

The four smiled and gave farewells as Mateo and Yavie departed from the small blacksmiths shop.

"Aki, where is Yavie?"

A deep voice came into Aki's ear through an intercom that stayed there always. "With Mateo."

"Do not let her come back to the Palace."

Pressing a finger to her ear, confused at what she just heard come over the small intercom, she gave a blink and questioned the man on the other end. "Why?"

"There has been a threat made on the Palace and I would prefer it if she stayed with Mateo in the Cathedral. I trust you will still keep an eye on her."

Aki nodded to herself. "Yes Mi'lord."

Her eyes moved back to the two in front of her, walking in the park which led to the palace. They were quiet, just enjoying each other's company. In the nearing distance, Mateo spied a stone bench under a rather large willow tree.

"Do you want to sit for a bit?"

Yavie made a small jump as she looked up at her taller counterpart, the tone in his voice disturbing her from her thoughts, a sweet smile on her face.

"Okay!"

He returned the smile and led the princess towards the tree, moving the curtain-like branches and leaves for her, following close behind. Yavie turned, her skirt flooding around her, as she sat and leaned against the bench back. Mateo sat beside her, putting his arm around her shoulders. A fine blush flushed her cheeks and she leaned against him, causing the same blood to rush to his cheeks. A small smile crept to his lips before he laid his head on the top of hers and Aki watched over them from within the upper branches of the tall Yanagi tree.

Darkness had befallen the park, and Yavie had drifted off leaning against Mateo, who figured it would a good time to head for the Palace. But as Aki watched his stir, she quickly descended from the upper levels of the tree and tapped his shoulder, placing a hand over his mouth before she spoke.

"Her father wants her to stay at the Cathedral."

Mateo blinked. "Why?"

Aki's eyes rolled, even though her herself had even questioned the king with that same word.

"A threat was made on the Palace, and King Klaus prefers her to be under, not only my protection, but yours as well, He trusts you. Do not betray it."

Aki whispered before she was gone, leaving Mateo with Yavie and the awakened fireflies. Mateo gave a heavy sigh and looked to the small girl beside him before he easily lifted her into his arms and began on his trek back to the Church.

With little to convince, Nade gave the okay for Yavie to stay in the guest room next to Mateo and Jebinim's room. Moving quietly into the room, Mateo continued to cradle the sleeping Yavie against his chest. With a bit less ease, he slipped her into a position where only one arm was holding her as his other hand reached down to pull down the blankets. He shifted himself to make it easier to lay her on the bed but Yavie made a small whine, not wanting to separate with the heat. Her hand gripped to his shirt as he laid her on the mattress. Her sleepy blue eyes looked to him, his returning the look.

As she leaned up, she pulled down on his shirt but she was moving as if to whisper something in his ear but at the last moment, she tilted her head...

...and placed their first kiss on his lips.

She then slumped down, pulling up the blankets, nuzzling into the semi-cold bed and drifted back to sleep. Mateo was utterly speechless...

and currently, not breathing.

After his breath caught back up with him, he studied her for a moment. He then smiled and placed a kiss on her head before slipping quietly from the room, then fell to a sit outside of her door, examining the blade Niras gave him.

Jach stirred awake from where he had fallen asleep on his bed. He rose smoothly and slipped from his bed. As he moved out into the hall, he found that everyone was asleep, even Mateo who was still in the hall. Jach moved over to him, his tail moving toward the sleeping figure, tapping him.

"Mateo?"

The other stirred a little, making a groan noise.

"Did Jeb lock you out again?"

A laugh came from Mateo as he looked up at Jach.

"No... That's not it. Yavie is staying in the guest room because something bad might happen if she goes back to the palace, so her father wanted her to stay here, under my protection."

Jach gave an understanding nod before he continued on down the hall, leaving Mateo to his guard duty. He himself was heading for the training rooms where he would train himself to the point of exhaustion; this was the way he normally gets to sleep. He slipped quietly into the dark, cold training room, sliding his goggles off as he lined himself into the center of the room and from there he began his katas. Minutes later...

::Koen...::

Jach froze mid kata and his arms fell. He glanced around almost panicking, looking for a spirit or something. But there was nothing, and that creeped him out more. Goose bumps rose on the back of his neck. There were only a few people who knew his real name and one is from another world while the rest are dead. He slumped to a sit where he stood and contemplated what he should do. //Does she have telepathy powers too? Of course she does, God would want His keys to have contact... But what is her name...// From what he could gather, it was a female voice. Getting up, Jach moved quickly from the room and down the hall. He gave a startle to Mateo as he stormed past towards the main hall.
