Chapter 3

"All this in Your Son's Holy name. Amen."

Rising from his knee, an elderly man rose from having knelt in front of the large wooden cross within the huge cathedral.

"What is the word, Nade?"

A soft voice called from behind as he turned, his dark brown hues shimmering in the low light as he looked to his companion, a large tanned hand brushing down his whitening brown hair. He was clad in conservative priest robes as was the young priestess behind him.

"The time is here... The road is long and treacherous ahead... Ara... I need you to gather the Diospada."

Ara paused for a moment, her mouth open as if to speak but instead, she turned, hurrying off in the direction of the housing chamber in the east wing of the cathedral. The sound of clashing swords echoed down the hallways as the small priestess made her way towards it.

"You're goin' down Mateo!"

A voice called from the door less room, the tone was fierce but with the breaks in the words you could hear the person was very out of breath. As Ara approached the door, she glanced in, her blue hues shifting to find two of the paladins, in only the breast plates of their armor, locked in some sort of play combat.

"That is an unlikely chance, Alphonse."

The taller one challenged as he pushed on his sword, causing Alphonse off balance and the dark red-head slipped to the ground with loud crash of metal.

"Huzzah! The last of the milfy is mine!"

Mateo gave a hearty laugh, quickly slipping off his breast plate, revealing plain black clothes. Ara's jaw was slack as she gave a short giggle, shaking her head as she moved into the room. The taller dirty blonde turned as he sipped the hot milfy.

"Were you seriously just fighting over milfy?"

Alphonse was slow to rise, wincing as his hand rested to his sword which he used as a crutch to pull himself up, his blue eyes looking to Ara.

"Yeah, that was the last tea bag of milfy, and Kolinas isn't back with the new box yet..."

He placed his pale hand to his forehead and gave a mock sniffle as Ara gave the act a laugh and a roll of the eyes.

"Boys..." Her eyes gave another roll.

"Anyway, Nade needs to speak with you all. The time is near..."

The pitch of her voice became very deep, very serious. Kolinas, who had just walked in, blinked with slight confusion in his blue eyes and a small box of milfy bags in his hands.

"Eh? Did I miss something?"

All that you could hear was the deep laughing of the giant dirty blonde in the back. Mateo just shook his head and gave a look to Ara, a soft exchange of glances between the two and the blond was off, heading the direction of a training room. Within a closed room, near by the room where Mateo and Alphonse were play fighting, beads of sweat trailed down a smooth, sleek, tanned body. Brown bangs stuck to their forehead as their body was completely still. Silver-glazed, dark brown eyes were closed as they held to the stances. There was no sound except for the soft rustle of clothing.

"You're doing well, Jach, You've gotten better."

Mateo called from the doorway. Jach quickly finished his kata and turned, the pads of his feet sticking slightly to the ground. The taller one tossed a towel to Jach and as he grabbed it, he lifted it to his forehead and wiped the sweat off his face.

"How are your eyes?"

Mateo softly questioned. The other didn't look at him, but to the towel, twisting it until his knuckles were white.

"I can see fine." He snapped defensively.

"Then why are the lights off?"

Jach blinked and then shot a angry glare at Mateo. Lifting a finger to the light switch, Mateo flicked on the light and Jach twitched, narrowing his eyes at the sudden flood of light before he quickly lifting his hand, shielding his eyes from the intense light.

"Dammit, turn it off! It's too bright!!"

Jach whined, but all Mateo did was toss a pair of dark lens goggles at him, which the blinded brunette caught without taking a glance to them. He quickly pulled the goggles over his forehead and shot another glare at Mateo, which the other just laughed.

"Interesting."

Jach just moved to pass Mateo, bumping into his shoulder as he pushed past him, his gi-top in his hand. Mateo just turned lightly on the pads of his feet and followed.

"Nade need us, He said the time has come..."

Jach aburptly stopped, causing the taller boy to nearly trample over him. Jach closed his eyes beneath those dark-framed goggles, a sigh releasing from his chest.

"I know. I can feel it in my bones..."

He slipped on his gi-top and turned into the bathroom, sliding the door shut. Mateo let out a heavy sigh before heading for the main sanctuary.

"Please... Lord... Let me forget..."

Hot water ran over the wooden shower stall as a tanned arm was leaned against the wood, head bowed low. But of course, Jach couldn't stop the memory from flooding back.

*~It was a long while back, about a year ago. It was the first time the Diospada had met the tip of the triangle for power. There were always the pagans, but this was a group that called themselves the Rising Shadow. Their leader is a manipulative succubus by the name of Tei Amarra. One of her assassins was sent to murder Sir Nade, the head priest of the main cathedral on Tusla, he was kind of like the Pope to the people of Earth. Jach had been training late that night, he had been spending most of his evenings in the training rooms, working on his endurance. As he headed from the room down the hall, he heard a creek, but just shook it off as the cathedral whining since it was an old structure. It wasn't until he was leaving the kitchen, a glass of water in hand, that he heard another creek, this one particularly catching his attention since the floors in the east wing had been replaced due to rotting. Glancing out the doorless kitchen, his brown hues caught sight of a young raven haired teen creeping in the dark shadows, dark eyes shimmered from the kitchen light.

"Who are you?"

Jach called but the raven haired youth defensively cast a spell and vanished back into the shadows, but Jach reacted quickly by casting a spell called Daylight which lit up the area and revealed the assassin in the shadows. A misty voice called to the boy.

"Come back to me Thexous..."

The voice sounded as mysterious as the shadows themselves.

Try again another time...

This Thexous lifted his hands and quickly made several hand motions before putting them near his eyes, palms out and fingers spread, casting a spell. He sucked up the light and released it in a blinding flare. Jach let out a cry, covering his eyes and falling to his knees, the glass of water falling to the ground and shattering outward. The first to find Jach was Kolinas, who was making a midnight trip to the bathroom.

A few days later, when they un-wrapped Jach's eyes, after many attempts on healing and enchantment spells, to find his eyesight wasn't lost. That's not what God wanted and so He inverted it, giving Jach beyond excellent night vision, and horrible day vision, his light sensitivity had been severely heightened.~*

"ARGH!"

He slammed a fist into the wooden stall side, the wood cracking in all directions under his knuckles. Thin trickles of blood streamed down to mix with water.

Dark eyes look to the small crowd gathered.

"Good..." A deep voice rang through the large sanctuary.

"I think all are here..."

Mateo lifted his hand, causing a quick interruption of Nade.

"Jach is in the shower and should be out shortly."

The older one gave a soft nod and fell to a relaxed sit on his tall wooden stool, deciding it would be better to wait for him. Suddenly, a fast paced jingle was heard through the silence causing the calm Mateo to tense. A short figure was seen with short auburn locks and in one swift movement was now clung to Mateo's back.

"Oooooo~! What's going on?"

It's childish voice rang in his ear as small legs hooked around his hips, her black skirt falling cascaded over the back of his legs; her shirt was a black, shoulder less, bell sleeve turtle neck. Her arms were curled around his neck and their cheeks were pressing against each other.

"Why do you jump on me?"

A soft laugh came from her as she lifted a little finger, poking his face.

"Because you're the tallest... Duh."

Mateo just gave a harsh roll of his eyes as the noise of footsteps was heard behind.

"Milady Yavie! Where did you run off too?"

A voice came from the halls.

"Nuuuu! Hide me!" Yavie whined, sliding off Mateo's back and hiding in front of him, her small hands clinging to his shirt as she closed her blue eyes. A slightly taller dirty blonde peered into the room, her hair and long brown robes flowed behind her, trying to catch up with her. Her green eyes looked around the large sanctuary, her hues passing over all the occupants.

"Have you all seen Princess Yavie?"

Everyone made soft glances to one another, then back to the exhausted blond, each either shrugging or looking away, waiting for Jach's arrival to get the gathering done and over with.

"Sorry Icari..." Kolinas spoke up, giving the handmaiden a soft smile.

"Don't lie. It is bad." A chill ran up Yavie's spine as a young Jounin revealed herself from her cloaking. She stood about five inches taller then Yavie, she wore very plain and simple colours such as tans and blacks, very neutral in her apperance. She had straight, long white hair, which was pulled into a pony tail and vibrant violet eyes.

"Aki!" Yavie called, turning and giving the Jounin a pout as she leaned against Mateo. This Aki gave a smirk.

"That's my name."

Yavie had heard that line one two many times before, knowing exaclty how it ended, 'don't wear it out'. The princess just gave a mock huff and scowled, crossing her arms over her chest as if about to give a tantrum. A loud sigh was heard.

"Fine." And Aki moved off, past Yavie and Mateo, stopping beside Icari to whisper something to the handmaiden and then proceed on past the entering Jach. The group blinked and Yavie celebrated by clinging to Mateo, a large smile plastered on her face as Mateo just rolled his eyes and gave her a pat on the head. Aki, who always watched over the young princess, soon watched from the balcony, cloaked from the view of others. Nade gave a slight cock of the brown before returning to a stand.

"Good... I'm glad you all have finally assembled."

Nade called to out to the group, all standing with the walls of the sanctuary were those who made up the group dubbed as the Diospada.

"God has finally fallen one of His angels... Who or where is something yet not revealed to us, but soon we will know, but hopefully not before it is too late. I have fears that the Larucah is with the pagans and that the Rising Shadow is closing in closely on her... We cannot allow her to stay in either's grasps.

A growl slipped through Jach's lips.

"That is why I need you all to find her and bring her back here."

By that time the tall youth had turned and was leaving the sanctuary, most eyes watching him, a soft sigh slid past Nade's lips and Kolinas slowly slipped past everyone, following after Jach.

"Does it hurt?"

The tender voice questioned from the door frame. Blue eyes fell to the figure huddled on the floor. Jach had one knee pressed firmly against his chest, the other knee had curled under him and his breath was fast as if he was in some sort of agony. All Kolinas could do was stand back and watch because the last time he acted without Jach's consent, well, it resulted with a scar on his cheek from the taller one's claw.

"It burns with every beat of her heart, it stings with every breath she takes..."

Jach finally whispered, breaking the eerie silence which had taken over the room.

"Lie on the bed and take off your shirt, let me look at it."

The cleric commanded, the odd thing about it, was that Jach complied. Kolinas could see in the shaded hues of his friend that his mind was very distant. Dropping his dark blue shirt to the ground, Jach moved sluggishly to the bed and partly collapsed on it, back down with his arms bowed under his head. Kolinas eased over to Jach's side, his deep blue hues looking over the mark on Jach's chest. It laid dead center on the tanned flesh. The mark was in the shaped of a cross but it was scarred and inflamed so badly it looked as if there were three nails beneath his skin, two horizontal, one vertical, which seemed longer then the two that lay horizontal. It seemed to be throbbing and scarring a little more then normally. Kolinas's hand began to move towards the mark, his hand glowing as if to heal the scarring when a thin black tail coiled itself tightly around his hand and wrist, failing it from coming into contact with the symbol.

"Remember Kolinas... It will burn you.

Jach paused, turning his gaze away from the other.

...Badly." He muttered, finishing his thought, a confused look came to Kolinas before he nodded. The tail slipped away from its clutch on his hand and disappeared back from whence it came. Jach soon turned his back to Kolinas, revealing a pair of seemingly painted on black dragon wings. A soft sigh exhaled from Kolinas as a sweet sound called for him.

"Koli?" He gave another quiet sigh before moving from the room, wishing there was more he could do for his friend.

"Coming Icari." Jach just lay quiet in his pale grey room. His eyes open beneath his goggles as he just stared at his hand, before it clenched into a fist.

*~"Ewww! Ew! Don't fight with him!"

A shrill voice called from the near of the inner circle.

"But someone has to put the damn brat into his place."

The voice of the taller boy said. All were in the middle of the school yard, in the deep green grass. A large crowd of kids circled around the two who were facing each other, the kids couldn't have been more than nine or ten.

"Just hit him already!!"

One of the smaller children called from deep within the crowd.

"No... I want to give our little brat the first and only hit he will make."

The taller boy laughed, but before he could finish and put up a defense, Jach growled and shot a sharp punch into his stomach, pushing his kncukles up into the boy's ribs, a sickly cracking noise echoed in the silence. The boy choked a little and snarled, throwing a retaliatory punch, angled down so his power pushed his fist straight into Jach's face, making the smaller boy fly back on to the ground and skid a few feet. Jach, of course, rose but was severely heaving as he did so. He moved quickly to make another attack, but those were blocked and he received a hard punch to the stomach, then an elbow to his face. But Jach refused to stay down, pain not an issue for him; but when he lifted his head, his eyes were inverted, his pupils were gold and what was normally white was black. He had long talons and his thin black tail wagged to the side as he lunged, his talons causing eight sets of scratches on the boy's chest before he was hit in the back of the head with a brick.

Jach stirred awake slowly, his vision was very blurry and he had an intense ache in the back of his head. His eyes shifted and he noted he was in the shade and there was someone sitting next to him. His eyes were normal and talons were gone.

"Oh! You are awake. You took quite a hit to the back of your head. I had my friend Kolinas heal it."

Jach blinked a few times to try and focus his vision. /Kolinas? That dorky cleric in my classes? Odd./ He slowly rose to a sit, lifting a hand to rub his eyes before he looked to the dirty blonde boy next to him. He looked familiar but Jach couldn't put a name to his face.

"Who are you?"

Jach seemed to finally get out before he glanced around, his vision was still a bit hazed, but he could atleast make out colour and figures. The boy blinked and gave a soft chuckle.

"I'm Mateo Lythari."

Soft mandolin music suddenly caught Jach's ear and he looked up to see yet another, but older and slightly taller, dirty blonde.

"That's my older brother Jebinim. He helped me break up the group of people and take you off to safety before you got into trouble."

"...Thank you..." Jach mumbled quietly, his gaze shifting to the grass.

"So why were you fighting?"

The deep voice from above questioned. Jach just sighed and rose, lifting his shirt, showing his chest and the mark.

"We were changing for gym when that kid saw my mark and wanted to touch it, like most idiot children, but I shoved him away and into a locker, so he threatened to beat me up during break."

His shirt fell back down as Mateo blinked.

"How did you get that?"

A sigh came from the small tanned boy as he fell back to a sit on the ground.

"I was born with it. The prophets of my old village told me it was the mark of the guardian of God's Key..."

Mateo's eyes fell but Jebinim soon spoke up.

"What happened to your village?"

Jach looked away, almost as if he were ashamed.

"I set it on fire four years ago."

Mateo and Jebinim exchanged a mental glance and a nod.

"Where do you live now?"

Jach gave a sigh. "I have my home..."

Another mental glance was set between the brothers. Mateo then got up and patted Jach on the back while he hung his arm around his shoulder.

"You can come and live with me, Jeb, Ara and Kolinas, in the Cathedral, I'm sure Nade won't mind."

Mateo gave a laugh.

"Thank you..." Jach showed a soft smile.~*

Kolinas watched as Icari packed his bag with essentials, a extra set of clothes, his bible, some potions made by the Cathedral's weapon company as well as some scrolls.

"Do you think that is all you'll need?"

Icari's soft voice interrupted Kolinas's thoughts. He gave a quick look and then a nod.

"Thank you. I can get my sleeping bag."

Icari nodded and put a kiss on Koli's cheek before leaving the room to get back to her and Ara's room to pack. Kolinas fell back on his bed.

*~A small group of children sat in the pews of the Cathedral.

"So... Jach... Why did you burn down your village?"

Kolinas quietly questioned, they had been talking about how they came to the Church, since all were orphans. Kolinas was abandoned at the Church steps by his mother who was poor and ill, His father had died the week before from the same illness. Ara was adopted by Nade after her father, one of the pastors, died in an accident. Mateo and Jebinim are kind of like Jach, sole survivors of their village, but it was attacked by a neighboring rival village with a long, bad history with their village. Jach wasn't so comfortable to talk about his village, but he knew, sooner or later, it was going to be asked about.

"They were sinful..." Everyone gave a blink, exchanging glances to who would speak next.

"Did you ask God to change their hearts?"

Jach's dark eyes began to glaze as he thought back to that night, those horrible screams...

"My brother and I prayed, but God would not show his healing hands and my brother began to lose hope, but his faith in God never swayed. It's a pity... I haven't seen him since the village burned down."

Everyone was in a odd awe, and all were speechless.~*
