DWL History: Drafts, Awards, and Former Players

Inaugural Season...(2002)

The DWL was created as a two-on-two basketball league in Montgomery Village, MD in the summer of 2002. The inaugural season had eight official teams, only to later allow two expansion teams for that very season. The teams were as follows, arranged in approximate draft order...

Team Captain (Two-men) One-man
1. Emil Superfin Vadim Shenderey
2. Matt Oldham Mike Haggerty
3. Jill Payagapanda Mike Sawyer
4. Andrea Hernandez Craig Schattner
5. Brian Cosker Kevin Eaton
6. Nik Mannon Srini Nataraja
7. Sid Viswanathan Mike Sorenson
8. Alex Parr Tim Rumpff
*9. Saam Parsa Scott Litrell
*10. Simen Dinitz Will Recalde

* Expansion Team

The captain with the final pick, along with the last pick in the draft, finished the season atop the league as Alex/Tim became the first team in DWL history to finish the season undefeated. Not too far behind were the very strong teams of Emil/Vadim and Brian/Kevin. Both of these teams had players who received awards: Vadim played up to his potential as he was awarded MVP and Brian Cosker was given the 2-man of the year.

The League gets serious...(2003)

The second annual 2on2 DWL season began in the summer of 2003 with a league of eight teams only to expand to nine later in the season. The 2003 season witnesses the debut of this website and also the first season statistics are kept. With only ten of the twenty players returning from the year before, the DWL opened with new faces and plenty of new teams. On draft day the main story was the slipping of MVP Vadim Shenderey and future superstar Adam Browne. The draft went as follows...

Team Captain (Two-men) One-man
1. Nik Mannon Srini Nataraja
2. Adam Walker Kevin Eaton
3. Abi Viswanathan Tim Rumpff
4. Emil Superfin Vadim Shenerey
5. Joel Katz Alex Parr
6. Matt Koranda Craig Schattner
7. Sid Viswanathan Francis Bloom
8. Craig Isenbart Adam Browne
*9. Saam Parsa Jeff Schattner

* Expansion Team

This season finished almost the same as the first with the captain who had the last pick finishing atop the standings. Craig Isenbart and Adam Browne became the second team ever to finish the season undefeated as they defeated the heavily favored team of Emil/Vadim. Along with the team of Nik/Srini, Emil Superfin and his teammate Vadim Shenderey were able to play together for the second consecutive season but both times coming up short. Shenderey's league domination lead to his second straight MVP award and newcomers Craig Isenbart and Adam Browne received the 2-man and Defensive Player awards respectively.

The League Continues... (2004)

The third DWL season was reduced to an 8 team maximum in order to ensure a completion of the year. Before this season, "The Joe's Cup" was accepted by the league as the official championship trophy. Here's the teams...

Team Captain (Two-men) One-man
1. Saam Parsa Vadim Shenderey (Traded for Craig Schattner)
2. Adam Walker David Lanham
3. Ryan Fitzmeyer Tim Rumpff
4. Emil Superfin Craig Schattner (Traded for Vadim Shenderey)
5. Joel Katz Adam Browne
6. Abi Viswanathan Kevin Eaton
7. Ryan Walker Alex Parr
8. Scott Henderson Craig Isenbart

Following a knee injury, Adam Walker was replaced by Ryan Motyka before any games were played. Ryan and David went on to become the third ever team to go undefeated and the first to win "The Joe's Cup". David was awarded the MVP trophy. Ryan Walker was the two-man and Alex Parr defensive player of the year.

The League Expands... (2005)

In its fourth season in existence, the DWL resembled the inaugural season as it expanded to the 10 teams that it originally had in 2002. Only five players remain from the first season and another five new rookies enter this season.

Team Captain (Two-men) One-man
1. Salar Samii Adam Browne
2. Adam Walker David Lanham
3. Joel Katz Kevin Eaton
4. Paul Ruckerman Vadim Shenderey
5. Abi Viswanathan Craig Isenbart
6. Sam Mason Tim Rumpff (Traded for Scott Henderson
7. Ryan Walker Alex Parr
8. Tom Brodrick Craig Schattner
9. Ryan Fitzmeyer Scott Henderson (Traded for Tim Rumpff)
10. Greg Hand Ryan Motyka
Once again David Lanham saw success going undefeated and retiring from the league with a perfect 10-0 record. Ryan/Alex made a big push in their second season together but fell short in the championship. Abi/Craig, an early season favorite, dissapointed and barely made the playoffs. David tied Vadim for MVPs after grabbing his second and Ryan Walker became the first person to ever win two 2-man awards.

DWL goes Cold... (WINTER 2005)

In its boldest move yet, the DWL organized a winter season as possibly the final season ever. Only four of the original DWL members remained in an eight team league.

Team Captain (Two-men) One-man
1. Raj Kakar Adam Browne
2. Adam Walker Vadim Shenderey
3. Salar Samii Tim Rumpff (Traded for Scott Henderson)
4. Paul Ruckerman Alex Parr
5. Sam Mason Craig Isenbart
6. Ryan Fitzmeyer Scott Henderson (Traded for Tim Rumpff)
7. Tom Brodrick Kevin Eaton
8. Abi Viswanathan Ryan Motyka
The season was completed but many rosters looked different by the end of the season. In the middle of the season, Ryan Motyka left the DWL for another basketball league and was replaced by the retired Greg Hand. Also, Vadim Shenderey tore a shoulder muscle and was replaced by the retired Ryan Walker, forming the very first team of brothers. Ryan/Tim surprised the league by winning it all, both winning their first Joe's Cup. Abi/Greg also surprised the league and upset a couple teams to make the finals. Vadim and Tim were named co-MVPs and Ryan Fitzmeyer and Adam Walker shared the 2man award.

DWL Survives... (2007)

After taking an entire summer off in 2006, the DWL returned stronger than ever. In 2007 the DWL opened up its schedule and two teams played nine games each. The league featured ten teams with mostly veterans but a lot of new faces. For the first time in DWL history, the one-men became the team captain and drafted the two men.

Team Captain (One-men) Two-man
1. Ryan Walker Nate Brubaker (Released for Sam Mason)
2. Ryan Motyka Ryan Fitzmeyer
3. Kevin Eaton Adam Walker
4. Scott Henderson Salar Samii
5. Alex Parr Greg Hand
6. Vadim Shenderey Emil Superfin
7. Tim Rumpff Andrew Fitzmeyer
8. Adam Browne Raj Kakar (Traded for Paul Ruckerman)
*9. Abi Viswanathan Paul Ruckerman (Traded for Raj Kakar)
*10. Matt McLeod Mark Henderson

* Expansion Team

Two teams had successful regular seasons but dissapointing post seasons. Kevin/Adam finished in first place atop one division with a 4-0 record while Alex/Greg won the other division with a 4-1 record. Both teams lost their only playoff series. Team Ryan/Ryan won the Joe's Cup by defeating Tim/Andrew's team with Matt McLeod playing for an injured Andrew Fitzmeyer. Tim Rumpff and Kevin Eaton shared the MVP while Adam Walker and Greg Hand shared the 2man award. Alex Parr was defensive player of the year and Salar was most improved. Ryan Fitzmeyer became the first player since David Lanham to win back-to-back Joe's Cups.
