Recognize reading as a source of pleasure and
 
  information         
Summarize a passage or story
   Compare and contrast characters or events
Identify the sequence of events in a paragraph or 
    story
Draw conclusions about a situation and make 
    generalizations and predictions

Identify the main idea and supporting details in a 
    paragraph or story

Identify the cause and effect of a given event
Use phonics skills to decode unknown words
Use context clues to determine the meanings of 
    unknown words
 
Identify homophones, antonyms, and synonyms
Read orally with smooth phrasing and expression

In addition to these skills, the English objectives listed below are integrated into the reading program.  The reading grade is affected by application of the English objectives as they are introduced within the context of the reading program.

Identify and write complete sentences
Identify the subject and predicate part of a sentence
Identify and write nouns--- singular, plural, common
    proper, and possessive
Identify and write verbs---action, linking, and  
    helping; present, past, and future tense
Write sentences with subject and verb agreement
Use correct punctuation---periods, commas, 
    exclamation points, question marks, and apostrophes
Use the writing process to develop writing skills

There will be six book reports assigned during the year.  The English grade is affected by application of English skills in daily writing activities.  Enjoyment of writing will be encouraged through creative writing activities.

Learn and remember the spelling of high frequency 
    core spelling lists (15 word list)
Spell the core words correctly every day, all day long 
    in every subject
Demonstrate mastery of all previously learned words

Math

Use whole numbers and equivalent forms to 
    represent situations
Compute, measure, and estimate with whole numbers 
    to solve problems.  Calculators and computers are 
    tools which can be utilized in these processes
Apply concepts of patterns and relations to solve 
    problems
Formulate and solve problems using the basic four 
    mathematical processes
Understand and apply the basic concepts of algebra, 
    geometry, probability, and statistics to solve
    problems
Evaluate, infer, and draw appropriate conclusions 
    from charts, tables, and graphs showing the 
    relationships between data and real-world situations
Make decisions and predictions based upon collected 
   data

Read maps using the map key, symbols, compass 
    rose, and scale
Locate places on a map or globe
Learn and use the cardinal and intermediate

Compare / contrast geography of the United States
Understand Earth's resources and conservation
Understand different cultural groups and minorities
Understand government and rules with a respect for 
    human rights, traditions, and symbols
