PLAYER PROFILES

PAT YOUNG
Pat 'Fuck it' Young, is still the senior member of the tournament and still the one who uses most bad language on the course. Pat had some problems with his swing last year and this led to him complaining about the handicap system, yet he still managed to come second overall. For this reason Pat is considered a warm favourite this year to regain the title this year. Pat had a 1st place in Ballinrobe last year.

1997 - 1st 1998 - 4th 1999 - J2nd

Odds: 5/2

CHRIS MORAN
Chris 'Chrishty' Moran is with us again despite the fact of being let down by his alleged date last year. Don't worry Chris if she had turned up would you have been able to get it up???? Chris has joined Ballinrobe this year and is hoping to get a big handicap (as if his swing wasn't a big enough handicap) if he does he has a chance of being placed. He recently scored 42 points off 18 at the open centre! Chris had a 2nd in Ballinrobe and a 3rd in Westport in '99.

1997 - J5th 1998 - 5th 1999 - J7th

Odds: 7/1

SEAN MORAN
Sean 'Ball & Chain' Moran, our Captain/Secretary, has finally decided its about time he won the tournament he helped conceive. After 2 years of inactivity he showed some great touches last year, (enough about his sex life), and this year expects to improve dramatically. Sean has been out playing with various members of the society giving them tips and ideas to improve their game. All he needs is someone to do the same for him, probably someone with a magic wand. Sean should be much higher placed this year. Sean had 2 wins at Ballinrobe last year.

1997 - J5th 1998 - 7th 1999 - 10th

Odds: 14/1

MIKE MOORE
Mike 'Dipso' Moore is once again welcomed back into the society after his sabbatical last year on the orders of fiance, Sheila. Mike is very much an unknown quantity this year as we don't know just how he is getting on with his well-documented weight problems. He was always a dark horse and may well be one to watch this year.

1997 - 2nd 1998 - 8th

Odds: 7/1

PADDY BURKE
Paddy 'Sandy' Burke comes into the tournament this year with his confidence very high. Paddy managed a 2nd in Westport and a 3rd in Ballinrobe last year after the previous 2 years of obscurity. Paddy has also returned to college, he says to continue accounting, but word has reached the editor that he is studying the theory of golf swing and majoring in the history of putting strokes! If Paddy stays relaxed he will finish better than he ever has before.

1997 - 7th 1998 - 9th 1999 - 9th

Odds: 20/1

TONY HOGAN
Tony 'Schumacher' Hogan comes to the tournament stronger, fitter and more hungry this year after a quiet year in '99. Seemingly he spent the whole week sulking that he wasn't allowed drive or drop his trousers again. Tony hopes this year to revive his fortunes and go better than he did in his first year when he came 2nd in the overall tournament. The committee is not convinced he has the stamina. Tony had a 2nd & 3rd in Ballinrobe in '99.

1998 - 2nd 1999 - 5th

Odds: 12/1

DAVID KERR
David 'Easy' Kerr was a bit of a disappointment last year. It had been stated that the women would be flocking to see 'Mr. Easy' in action, but it never happened. Dave, you better come up with something really good this year to make up for that. On the golfing front Dave struggled early in the week but started to come good as the week went on, unfortunately it was too little too late. He is expected to come a lot closer this year. Dave had a 2nd in Ballinrobe in'99.

1998 - 6th 1999 - 6th

Odds: 10/1

JOHN WALSH
John 'Contented' Walsh looks like the man to beat this year. Everything is going right for this man. In the last 6 months he got married, he got his licence back and he joined a golf club to get a very dodgy handicap. Even better he should be in the marital home by the time this goes to press. This is a happy man on the top of his game. He also wants to put the memory of last years humiliation out of his mind, can he be beaten???????? John won Westport last year.

1997 - 3rd 1998 - 3rd 1999 - 12th

Odds: 3/1

DERMOT BURKE
Dermot 'Presidente' Burke is the Courage Virility Golf Society champion for the 2nd year running. This title was won quite easily by a clear 8 points with a record score of 129 despite being severely handicapped. Dermot may take it easy this year so that the CVGS trophy can be shared amongst the other members of the society. He feels that if he wants to he will win it back the next year. Time to prove him wrong! Dermot had a 1st and 2nd in Ballinrobe last year.

1997 - 4th 1998 - 1st 1999 - 1st

Odds: 7/2

CHRIS HOGAN
Chris 'hustler' Hogan is the 3rd newest of the Manchester brigade. Chris struggled to reach any kind of form last year, in fact on the first 3 days he had the 3 lowest scores ever recorded in the society. Chris improved after that and a rumour has emerged from Manchester that this man is having lessons. Hopefully he will have a better year in 2000 and prove the people who think he should stick to pool wrong, mind you his pool isn't that good.

1999 - 13th

Odds: 100/1

JOHN MCENERY
John 'Mac' McEnery joined us for the first time last year and made an instant impact. He came 3rd in an open competition in Galway Bay off a handicap (????) of 24. Because of John's links with the powers that be in the Gardai, his score was not really noticed and the card got lost in the post on route to his home club! If he can join us again this year he will be in with a reasonable chance of winning, and not just because he told us he wants to win.

1999 - J7th

Odds: 7/1

TIM DOYLE
First time entrant across the Big Pond, Tim showed his American colleagues how to deal with jet lag. With a big drive and delicate touch around the greens he belied his lowly status over his much talked about companions, 'Tumbling Carragee' and Billy 'Under the Thumb' McDermott. Has threatened to return to defend his prize at a future date!

1999 - J2nd

TOM MORAN

Took time off during the winter to concentrate on his game full time. Would be the clear favourite but is not expected to play the regulation number of rounds, although he is hopeful that Ann will allow him to compete for the weekend trophy.

1999 - 4th

JOE GAROFALO
Provider of the sponsored magnum of champagne from Nico's Dublin Restaurant, the finest Irish-Italian food in Ireland and Italy! Some of his performances last year made for a red face and there is doubts over his availability to attend this year - Chris got his holiday form in first!

TONY GERAGHTY
1999 saw the debut for the man from Athlone - has slept with more Morans than any other tour member! Time spent on the 19th rather than the previous 18 exposed his lack of competitive edge and Tony is the only one who will be putting money on Tony this year! He thought Flannery's was the best pub!

1999 - 11th

WEEKENDERS

JOE CORRIGAN

Joe 'Beardy' Corrigan has been an ever present with the tournament at the weekend stage. Joe's game has been transformed in the last few months with the help of a King Cobra driver and 3 wood. He will be a serious contender this year for the weekend prize. Of course Joe's cause is helped by the fact he gets more sleep than the rest of us because he doesn't make breakfast or wash up afterwards, rumour has it he will be requesting breakfast in bed this year. Joe won the 1st day in Ballinrobe last year.

1999 - 4th

Odds: 3/1

EAMON O'CARROLL
Eamon 'Smack' O'Carroll is the current CVGS weekenders champion. Last year this publication predicted that Eamon would be the man to beat and we have to say that this year nothing has changed. Eamon tells us he has an official handicap this year, whether this will be accepted by the committee or not remains to be seen. This man has a drive to kill for but unfortunately he has a putting stroke he will kill over. Eamon came in 2nd in Galway Bay last year.

1999 - 1st

Odds: 7/4

JOE COLFER
Joe 'Little Joe' Colfer has decided to join us after 2 years of surgery. He joins us a stronger, fitter, better golfer with a bionic shoulder. Joe only resumed golfing in May after 20 months out of the game. The committee recognise this and will give him an appropriate handicap. He is still one of our virgins as regards winning on the tour but he has only played 2 outings. With a decent handicap Joe may be placed this year but he needs to cut down on the alcohol. That amount of gin would give anybody the shakes.

Odds: 7/1

TONY CUNNINGHAM
Tony 'Trooper' Cunningham joined us for the 1st time last year. Mind you he only stayed 2 days, seemingly he missed his little pet too much! Tony had a good weekend, finishing up 2nd in the tournament. This year Tony tells us he plans on investing in a new set of clubs, the current set were owned by his grandfather!!! If he does he should have a good chance of going one better than last year. Tony had a 2nd place in Ballinrobe in '99.

1999 - 2nd

Odds: 5/2

PADRAIG MORAN
The biggest society winner outside of our Annual Tour in 1999. Padraig's sterling efforts over many a Friday night almost single handedly won the coveted Pierce Purcell Shield national title for Galway Bay Golf and Country Club (famously referred to in Taaffes as the Portrush Goldrush). He is currently the toast of all Galway, enough to sicken any tribesmen, who hand on heart know they wouldn't have done it without the man from Mayo. Now that he has moved onto bigger competition he is unlikely to be able to find the time to play sufficient rounds for qualification. Rumour has it he will be playing at Ireland's Ryder Cup 2005 venue, the K Club, in the Mercedes Benz/Irish Independant Executive Golf Trophy.

1999 - 5th

ALSO RANS - NO ODDS QUOTED!

TONY MORTON

Tony 'Kaffer' Morton made the biggest impact in the shortest time of all our representatives last year. He managed to upset locals in Ballinrobe, Galway and Shannon in his short time with us. Has promised to be on his best behaviour this year - has been said to remark "I was doing really well last year until we got to the golf course but I won't make that mistake again!" Was very impressed with Miller's sponsorship at Galway Bay last year having got more out of it than anybody else.

MICHAEL SEAL
Mike 'Uncle Albert' Seal - a big hit with the waitresses our Michael was severely handicapped with having to chauffeur Kaffer all over the West of Ireland (see feature story). Unable to get permission to travel this year he is another who has vowed to come back again - why does it sound like a threat?
