Today's News Today Tuesday

August 28th, 2001

Lauragh Gill Crowned Queen of the Lake District Ballinrobe girl Laura Gill was crowned Queen of the Lake District last Friday night in the Valkenburg Hotel after an extremley close contest. 15 girls sang, danced, recited poetry and played various musical instruments in front of a huge crowd and left the judges with an extremely unenviable task of selecting just one! Laura, who also celebrated her 21st Birthday last weekend, was definitely a worthy and very popular winner. Representing Inch's bar, Ballinrobe, Laura sang Mary Black's "Caledonia" as her party-piece. There were girls from Hollymount, Roundfort, Kilmaine, Clonbur, Partry, Finney, Latvia and Holland but it was the Ballinrobe girl who collected the Tiara, Galway Crystal Trophy, Cheque for 300 and now goes forward to represent the area in the Galway Rose competition. We wish her all the best in her duties as Queen of the Lake District for the coming year.
