| wah lah! a bunch of links that might be of some use (or at least of interest) for those WONDERFUL people planning on coming into richmond for our wedding! i mean, you might want something to do before 1pm on saturday, or somewhere fun to eat on friday night, or something. i'll modify it periodically and also make some kind of print-outs to leave at the hotel for you guys. note: all distances are measured from the hotel. acapella - (1.6mi) our neighbors, john & linda own this sweet restaurant (with a pub in the basement) in historic church hill's patrick henry inn, right across from st. john's chuch. we've been there several times (including before our "june date" to see stomp at the carpenter center) and the food is PHENOMENAL. i would walk many miles to have their chocolate mousse cake... (note: it might not be brilliant to walk to this area of town at night though). john is responsible for the german food on the menu, his pal does the greek fare, and i think they share the italian cuisine. mmmm. (they have redecorated since the pictures in the link, though, and john and linda are not in the pictures...even though it says john and linda...) capitol building - (.5mi) hey, they give free "toars" (the southern way to say tours) and richmond IS the capitol of the commonwealth (please, there are 46 states and 4 commonwealths)...and it's just down the street from the hotel! the original architecture was designed by thomas jefferson himself. no kidding. carytown - (2.1mi) lotsa shopping, eating, and walking... and all kinds of people watching! our favorites: roly poly's wraps (we like the ranch roast, catalina chicken, cashew chicken, hot honey, and cobb salad best, though we've tasted most of the offerings and haven't met one we didn't like), "for the love of chocolate" (chocolate every way you imagined...over peanuts, over ants, and in a shape for every occasion), the byrd theatre (go saturday night at 7:15 or 9:30 so you can see -before the movie- an organist come up out of the floor and to play tunes to the sparkle of a disco ball!), bev's ice cream (across from the byrd...where we go after my tap recitals). there is copius free public parking, but there are also copious people trying to use it, so keep your eyes peeled! children's museum of richmond - (2.1mi) i volunteer here regularly. it's a fun and friendly place, but unless you have kids, it might not be for you. it has been repeatedly recognized as among the top children's museums in the nation (!). davis and main - (1.8mi) DElicious food! we went here for dinner before our "november date" at the richmond ballet's carmina burana. we were in suits and silk, and those at the table next to us were in sweaters and jeans...it kinda runs the gamut! a review hollywood cemetery - (.6mi) to steep in that confederate history while enjoying the beautiful outdoors, scope out the extensive collection of burried confederate heros here! jefferson hotel - (.3mi) a beautiful old hotel just two blocks away, where frank (sinatra) & elvis have graced the halls with their presence. not simultaneously though. i hear the afternoon tea is simply splendid, dahling, and the price covers not only food, but the luxurious ambiance. reservations required. definately a very richmond thing to do. but not with small children. maymont - (2.7mi) lotsa gardens, flowers, a nature museum (a very good one, actually), and horse and buggy "toars"...it has a mini domesticated zoo, too! we went here on the extra credit day 'coz we felt all romantic like that. monument avenue - (1.2mi) if you feel like casually driving around to scope out what richmond has to offer, then take a ride down monument ave...it might be the highest concentration of confederate hero statues that i've ever seen on permenant public display...plus arthur ashe (in front of whom's statue ryan and i had our picture taken for extra credit). the houses along that particular stretch are fun to oggle at, too! we drove down monument after the hurricane to survey the dammage when bec and art came to town. the hotel is on franklin, which becomes monument when you go west---but franklin is one-way going east. just so you know. pearly's - (.2mi) a delicious diner/deli directly behind the hotel, on grace street. mom and i ate here while staying at linden row, and i've been back a couple of times since then (usually coordinating with library book sales, across the street from linden row on franklin street) poe museum - (1.4mi) nevermore! i've been three times...i think the best part is the little garden courtyard (free, and they sometimes serve coffee and lemonade), but the "toar" is quite informative---and you get a swell sticker. science museum of virginia - (2.0mi) i used to do a lot of architecture work with these swell folks when i worked for teng&associates. they have a cool airplane and health food exhibit, an imax....and it's in an old trainstation! we pondered the rotunda as a reception place, but decided on the VMFA CEO instead. they also own the airplane museum out by the airport (on airport drive --the building with the huge blackbird in front...can't miss it), but we've never been. sine - (.9mi) MMM! our favorite place in shockoe (the bumpy brick street part of town)....and irish pub with the best galway fish sandwich (with a jalapeno spread) known to man. notable lunch dates here: when mom and alex flew in to meet ryan and check out the college of william and mary, and later for ryan's 27th birthday lunch. excellent peanutbutter pie. st john's church - (1.6mi) where patrick henry declared "give me liberty or give me death!"...you can relive it every sunday at 2pm! the south specializes in reinactments. poe's mother is buried here, too. third street diner - (.3mi) inconsistant service (they'll get to you when they feel like it), but they're friendly enough, and it's good diner food, open 24 hours, and only three blocks away from the hotel! the phamily and i have tried it out, and emily and i have gone there a couple times....and we keep going back! a list of events happening in richmond october 28 through the 31st is linked through the stonewall jackson picture in the upper left corner of the page... have fun! ask me questions if you have them! |
