These filters are for colored flash effects during daylight. A simple principle, but difficult to put into practice. You should already have mastered the techniques of daylight flash and fill-in flash, and will require a flash with a guide number of over 40. The filter is affixed to the flash using masking tape. (Do not remove the polly cover on the largest filter. it protects the filter from the tape used to secure it to the flash unit)
Several effects are possible:
1. Flash foreground in color.
2. Bluish night effect in background and correct foreground, or
3. Colored background with unchanged foreground.
1. Flash foreground in color.
Position colored filter in front of flash. Produces an acceptable effect if the film speed on the camera is set to twice or four times the ISO rating. Use TTL metering or set identical computer aperture on camera and flash.
2. Bluish night effect in background and correct foreground
Tungsten film. Underexpose by one stop or double ISO rating, fit yellow color back filter (192) in front of the flash. Use TTL flash metering or computer-controlled aperture.
This type of flash shot is most effective if the camera is not automatically set to a synchronized shutter speed, so that daylight and flash can complement one another.
3. Colored background with unchanged foreground
A color back, filter is fitted in front of the lens and one of a complementary color is fitted in front of the flash unit. The subject which is to be lit by the flash should not be out of range of the flash. The aperture set on the flash computer should be one stop greater than that set on the camera lens.

The Color Back filter sets are no longer made by Cokin. You might find them in old camera shops and on eBay.
