Karaoke Madness!

While Karaoke had fairly recently become popular here in the USA, it is nothing new. Karaoke is Japanese and it basically means "without a band or orchestra". That is not verbatum but basically the meaning. In Japanese "Karaoke" is pronounced Kahh-dee-okey. We pronounce it Carry-okey. I do not have a history as to when it originated in Japan but I do remember when I used to work in a Japanese resturant, every once in awhile, a group would book the back room and have a party and there would be Karaoke as the people sang traditional japanese songs. The boss here was the one who told me about Karaoke's japanese beginnings.
Now the concept of Karaoke goes way back. Singing to pre-recorded music is Karaoke, artists sometimes would make an appearance at a club or a mall and would sing a song or two. Rather than bring a band, they would simply sing to their music from a tape. The latino sensation Menudo did this in the 80's. It was in the 80's where mini-studios started appearing in malls and amusement parks. Here one could go and sing and have themselves recorded. They simply selected a song they wanted to do and the operator would provide a lyric sheet and the backing music, recording the singer singing to it.
Now, me and Karaoke go a long way back. Back in the late 80's, I used to hit these mini studios from time to time. I would sometimes write my own lyrics and sing them in place of the song's lyrics. Later, a few bars began to have Karaoke. Again, the participant would sing from a lyric sheet, there were no on-screen lyrics back then. This whole thing was not at all new to me. I have been to a real recording studio where I would sing my own lyrics to instrumental versions back when I was in High School, before the mini-studios began popping up. Then there was the times when I went in and built my own songs from scratch like Bobby McFerrin did with his hit Don't Worry, Be Happy I would sing all the music parts such as the guitars, piano, bass etc. Back when I had my big crush on Tom Howell, I went into a studio and recorded a few songs I had made about him. These were my earliest experiences with doing Karaoke.
Karaoke machines with on screen lyrics came later and it was in Denver in the early 90's when I first sang with lyrics on the screen. There was the FOX radio station that hosts Karaoke at the Taste Of Colorado, an annual festival much like a "Farmers Market" featuring a carnival, live music and tents set up by various participating businesses anywhere from Food to clothing, to arts and even services; there was a small night club called Metro where there had Karaoke every Tuesday back in 1994. I recently discovered that Charlies, a local gay bar has been hosting Karaoke for sometime. In early 2003, I spent an entire week going to Charlies having some drinks(I don't drink on a regular basis so this was a break from my routine) and dancing when I discovered that they had not only one night, but two featuring Karaoke; Monday and Tuesday.
I call myself The Mad Barista since I am a Barista (one who works the Espresso Bar). I sing anything from Britney Spears to Nsync but also some Classic rock and R&B hits. Here I am, this time at BJs singin' my Clay Aiken favorites....and also a Britney Spears song too.

Clayboy Singin' Britney
'Everytime I try to fly/I fall without my wings/I feel so small/I guess I need you baby'... Here I am singing Britney Spears' song called Everytime. A beautiful sad song from In The Zone. It's a good thing I did not sing this song the night I did Karaoke after the Clay Aiken concert. As the Karaoke dj observed: "You probally would have fell apart". I was a total wreck that night.

Yo, Dave. Sing it!!
Come on, Dave, sing that song!
This is Dave, (but not the same Dave who runs the Karaoke show). He comes to my store often. He got on me about being "mad" at Clay Aiken over his going to Los(t) Angeles. (I was not mad at Clay over moving to L.A.! Just upset that he did). He believes that Clay will not become tainted by L.A. and Hollywood's glamour and fast lifestyles. He believes Aiken's family will keep him grounded. Well I hope so...or else!!!! Dave like Steven Curtis Chapman and Amy Grant as well as Clay Aiken.
All I Want Is Your Touch

'All I want is your touch....' My favorite C.A. boogie-song. Here I sang along with Clay as I used the actual song because the karaoke dj did not a karaoke version. Here I let out a primal roar of sheer ecstacy as I come off the bridge line 'And you'll see my body is AIKEN, I'm hopelessly taken by you.... UUUUUUAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! All I want is your Touch.... ' What a sweet torment!
Where My Girlz At?

Where My Girlz At? A cute couple who said I belted "Invisible". The one in the black shirt took it to the Old Skool when she sang Xscape's 1994 slow-jam called Understanding. She kicked-ass! She also loves Alanis Morrissette.

Clayboy and Karaoke Buddiette

This is Michelle. She ran the Karaoke show when Dave was on vacation. Recently, she won Karaoke Queen at Charlies! The prize, she and the Karaoke "King" got to sing the National Anthem at the Gay Pride Festival.

Clayboy and another Karaoke buddiette!

This is Jamie, a friend of Michelle's. She like Britney Spears for her dancing, and Hilary Duff for her singing. She sang Duff's song, Come Clean the night this was taken. I have since sung both that song and So Yesterday
Clayboy and Amy.

This is me with Amy. She also ran the Karaoke show when Dave went on vacation and she sang Invisible before I had over the on Clay Aiken. She knows all about my thing for Clay Aiken. Now among all the hoopla that Clay may be gay - Amy contends that he is straight. That's right sis! You tell 'em!!!! Oh and she likes my rendition of Invisible when I change the words.

Clayboy Singin' Invisible

'If you were invisible/you could just watch me in my room/If you were invincible/you could make me your baby tonight/If hearts were unbreakable/I could just tell you how I feel....' Oh yeah!!!! Here I go singin' my babe's hot hit...with a little twist!!!! I originally sung it this way right after the concert at Charlies. Here I am at B.J.'s singing it for Amy....and the most beautiful boy on Earth.
Come on Kev, sing that song!

This is Kevin. The boy can sing!!! He has a voice similiar to George Michael and does a great karaoke rendition to Michael's Kissing A Fool and Careless Whisper. Now, we did Oops, I Did It Again as a duet. He loves it when I sing Don't stop Movin' by S-Club 7.

Clayboy and a visitor

I forgot who this lady was visiting from, and didn't get her name but she was alot of fun. She asked her friend to take her picture with me after I finished singing Sugar Ray's Falls Apart. Just for the fun I shouted BRITNEY SPEARS RULES and this girl and her friends cheered. They really enjoyed the song. Since I had my camera handy, I had her friend take this picture too.
Groovin!

Gettin' my groove on! Right after my Sugar Ray's song, somebody sang Britney Spears' Baby One More Time and so me and somebody got into the groove. I have been told that I dance well. Well, I just love a good time!
Ricky!

Ricky here, singin' his song. I dubbed him "American Idol" because he sang Kelly Clarkson's A Moment Like This and Before Your Love!
