I acknowledge how much people love Google at this point of time with a sinking feeling in my stomach. I am thinking of the time in a few years when we find out that they power their servers on the walking labour of Indonesian peasants or some such. I want to believe in a better world, but I can't. I love the idea of a world in which all the labour that's currently expended in pointless work making pointless products could be put towards a better society. A world in which all of the people who make banana hammocks and bagel cutters would actually be spending their time, say, planting trees which is something that humanity needs but is somehow reluctant to put money into. I like the simple idea of companies making money because they're providing a needed service, well. Google for me embodies this ideal, but somehow I can't trust them.
