DAY 1 : 12 MAY 2001
• New York / Washington DC, USA

Too late to turn back!

Eyeing each other nervously, 13 of us gathered in the lobby of New Yorks Skyline Hotel, eager to start our Trailblazer adventure. (For a detailed rundown of whos who, see the profiles page). There, we were greeted warmly by Audrey McNabb, who was to be our trek leader for the first half of the trip, the Transcontinental South, and who many of us would also come to regard as a good friend.

After a quick talk & filling in of forms, we headed out to meet something else which would become a major part of our trek... the van, or as our Danish buddy Anders would say the wan!

her ladyship the Statue of Liberty, NY

Loading the van for the first time was an experience, as we all learnt that Aussies sure dont pack lightly!

Then, finally we were on our way to Washington DC!

After arriving & setting up our first camp, we headed off for a night tour of Washingtons amazing monuments and that evening we also met up with another trek group who were on the same itinerary & who we got to know quite well - some of us better than others!!
