INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS AND TRAININGS |
MR. ERICSON V. FRIGINAL, Director of Information and
External Affairs/Instructor, was awarded a Fulbright grant under the United States
Information Service (USIS) to pursue Masteral studies in Applied Linguistics/Teaching
English as a Second Language (TESL) at the Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff,
Arizona. His field of specialization is on Corpus Linguistics and Computer Aided Language
Learning (CALL). Mr. Friginal graduated with Academic Distinction in May 2000. He also
received a special recognition for Academic Achievement and Excellence from the
International Office of NAU. His written requirement paper was on Articulatory
Processes in L1 and L2 Phonological Acquisition. He was one of the 36 recipients of
the AT&T Asia-Pacipic Leadership Award in 1998. The prestigious award is given each
year to deserving international students coming from all over the Asia-Pacipic region
enrolled in universities across the United States. |

MR. EUSEBIO V. ANGARA, Board Secretary, (right on
picture) is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Environmental Conservation at the
Hiroshima University (HU) in Hiroshima, Japan after finishing his MS in Environmental
Science also at the said institution. He is a recipient of a Monbushu Research Scholarship
grant from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Mr. Angara had received
academic awards/recognition on his Masteral level studies in Japan, making it easier for
him to be granted a continuation of his scholarship program leading to a Doctoral Degree.
He is also now competent in the use of communicative Japanese language. Mr. Angara had
presented reports at different international conferences including his recent trip to
Barcelona, Spain for a project presentation on Ecological Management. He is currently the
editor of a departmental newsletter at the Environmental Sciences Department of the HU. |

ENGR. LORETO H. BARROGO, Director of Engineering and
Technology Department/Instructor, spent a full month (June 27 - July 27, 2000)
of training in Project and Transfer Oriented Teaching Method at the Korea
University of Technology and Education (KUTE) in Chonan, Korea. The training package was
sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) extended to
representatives from Southeast Asian countries as part of the countries' bilateral
programs. The course was set-up to cover a range of areas intended to assist the
vocational training of developing countries. The emphasis of the training was on the
development of the teaching profession through courses in teacher education. Exposure to
various instructional media, site visitations, introduction to the Korean history,
culture, and language were also included in the package. |

MR. ANTONIO D. BOLIVAR, Research
Coordinator/Instructor, attended the 2nd Vocational Training for ASEAN
Countries (Mechanical Production/Welding) (right on picture) from June 30 to August
24, 2000 at the Seoul Institute for Vocational Training in Advanced Technology (SIVAT) in
Inchon, Korea. The training was sponsored by the KOICA in cooperation with the Korean
Overseas Manpower Agency (KOMA). The training course focused on the operation, handling,
and management of Computer/Numerical Controlled (CNC) Machines: CNC Lathe, CNC Machining
Center, and Wire Cutting Machines. The participants had various educational tours in
industries and companies in Seoul like Hyundai Motors, Hyundai Heavy Industry, and LG
Electronics. |

MR. ROMMEL V. SINDAC, designated Instructor of
Engineering and Information Technology Department (EITD), was also a
recipient of the KOICA/KOMA training grant. He participated in the 3rd Advanced
Vocational Training (Electronics/CAD/CAM) held in Seoul, Korea from September 15 to
November 11, 2000. The course exposed the participants to new technologies in electronics
and Computer-Aided Design including hands-on training activities in various machines and
technologies. The skills and expertise Mr. Sindac got from the program are very much
beneficial to the Department of Engineering and Technology of the College. Mr. Sindac was
also able to participate in other related trainings on computer technology at the Seoul
Institute for Vocational Training in Advanced Technology (SIVAT). Exposure trips and
visits to different tourist attractions in the area were also included in the package. |

MS. GEMMA M. LICAYCAY, Instructor, attended a
training course in Isolation and Culture of Marine Fungi from Sai Keng and Tai Po,
Hong Kong at the University of Hong Kong (May 2 to June 16, 2000 ) as part of her MS
in Biochemistry at the University of the Philippines in Los Ba�os, Laguna. She is
currently pursuing a Doctoral program in Marine Science (Marine Biology) at the UP-MSI,
Diliman, Quezon City. Ms. Licaycay subsequently is undergoing a 10-month training course
(October 2, 2000 to July 26, 2001) in Sustainable Use of Marine Microorganism and
Marine Natural Chemicals) at the Marine Biotechnology Institute (MBI) Co., Ltd.,
Tokyo, Japan. The course is under the auspices of the JICA. The training program is
designed for the participants to acquire knowledge necessary to become specialist who can
conduct basic research in contributing to the conservation of biodiversity and its
sustainable use. It will also familiarize participants with research procedures or
experimental techniques concerning marine biotechnology. |

MS. ANNIE R. CAPIN, Instructor, (center on
picture) attended a training on Quality Control on Processed Foods
from August 27 to October 10, 1998 at the Korea Food Research Institute in Seoul, Korea.
The training was comprised mainly of lectures and orientations on Fish Quality Control and
also on various technical information on food processing (fruits, vegetables, as well as
meat products). Ms. Capin has already applied most of the ideas and information she
learned from the said training to her classes in Food Technology at the Bazal Campus. |

MR. LAVERNE L. CABICO, Farm
Superintendent/Instructor, went to Winchester, England in August 1996
to attend a training on Agricultural Technology sponsored by the EEC-AGRED. The
focus of the program was on the administration and monitoring of agricultural technology
projects of institutions with DAT-BAT programs. Trends and features of European
Agricultural programs were presented and studied in relation to how improvements can be
made in developing agricultural countries like the Philippines. Mr. Cabico was able to
participate in various educational trips in England as well as establishing contacts with
fellow attendees of the training. |
