ASCOT Production

PRODUCTION AND INCOME GENERATING PROJECTS

In a effort to achieve fiscal autonomy, ASCOT has strengthened its Income Generating Projects (IGPs) through internal fund generation. Although instruction is the primary role of the College, the establishment of additional IGP's handled by faculty members is also relevant in order that theories be conceptualized effectively through actual practice and entrepreneurship. In line with this, a Director for Auxiliary Services was appointed to supervise the IGP's. Aside from the College canteens located each in the two campuses, most of the projects were agribusiness in nature as shown in the proceeding tables.

On Crop Production, the College maintains rambutan, citrus, rice, banana, vegetable and coconut products. Some animal and crop products are being brought to the College's postharvest facilities for processing. Among the processed foods are tocino and longanisa with an average production each of 70 kilograms per month, citrus concentrate, buko pie, coco jam, ginger tea, papaya pickles and yema are also produced by the project. The College also runs a cutflower and scion grove nursery with its stock summarized in the following tables.

The College is starting to reap the various production incomes from projects initiated from the establishment of the research, extension, and production units mostly situated at the Bazal campus under the Department of Agriculture and Aquatic Science. Total accounting of the Income Generating Projects of ASCOT started formally in 1997. The following table shows a summary of total production income of ASCOT from projects from 1977 to August 2000

Breakdown of Total Income of IGPs from 1997 to August 2000

The Income Generating Projects of the College is not only an alternative source of funds but also a great support for the food production program of the government especially in the Philippine countryside. The programs of the College in terms of the sustainability of food supply in the province are also in congruence with the provincial Food Security Council under the Office of the Governor, Hon. Edgardo L. Ong. The unit headed by the Director of Auxiliary Services manages and supervises all IGPs harnessing the resources of ASCOT, facilities and expertise. A sample breakdown of Income Generating Projects of the College (for 1997) focusing on the various money-making projects at the Bazal Campus is given below:

ASCOT FEED AND OIL MILLS

The medium scale feed mill project of ASCOT was established in response to the shortage of commercial feeds in the market all over the province and generally the high cost of available feeds used by the animal industry. The project was initially funded by EEC-AGRED (total amount of P 410,000.00). This project shows good promise in addressing the needs of farmers in the area as well as providing the College with additional income. Just recently, the NAFC has released project funds to the DA-RFU IV to finance the working capital of the project for the procurement of feed ingredients for feed mill operations of ASCOT. A total amount of P500,000.00 grant was released in September 2000.

The oil mill at the Bazal Campus is also already in operation producing quality cooking oil for household use. the funds were provided by Sec. Angara - P 835,750.00 for the equipment and P437,000.00 for the building. The marketing and commercialization of the produced cooking oil is curently being intensified. Demand for ASCOT-quality cooking oil is gradually increasing in the central towns of the province. Branching out operations to the northern towns is being targeted for the coming months.
