Full
Sole and Split soleWhen going to buy ballet slippers it's
important to consider which type to buy...If you're a beginner than
it's best to go with a full sole slipper, that's made of kid leather or
satin.Split soles are for dancers who need to improve their arch and point
better. Also you can buy your slippers in either canvas or leather. Most
dancers prefer the leather because it's tougher, durableand dries
quickly.Canvas shoes tend to tear easy especially on hard wood floor and
wear out much sooner, but they're also cheaper!
Pointe
Shoes
First and foremost
pointe shoes should be bought only when your dancing teacher tells you
too. Many young dancers assume that they are ready for pointe to soon
and go out and buy
the shoes anyways. When buying your first pair you should have an adult
presentwith you or if possible your teacher. The reason ballet dancers
wear pointe shoes isto give the illusion of weightlessness achieved by
spinning, skimming and staying in poses "sur les pointes"
Commonly
asked Questions
How
long do I have to be dancing to go on pointe?
To go on pointe you
have to have strong legs and ankles. And be dancing a minimum of 2 yrs but
there are exceptions.
Is
it true that you can damage your feet on pointe?
Yes. But usually when
a dance damages their feet it's because they were put on the shoes to soon, either
by themselves or buy a careless teacher. However in some dance supply stores
the clerk reserves the right to sell pointe shoes if they see you are not
ready for them.
What
can I expect at my first fitting?
To get fitted for pointe
most stores require you to make a 45 minute appointment
in advance. At the
appointment they'll measure and weigh you. Then they'll try
on some shoes, when the find a pair that feels and looks right they'll ask
you to rollout en pointe. If your feet are strong enough you'll be able
to manage. Rememeber you mustn't "jump" into the shoes but roll out
into them! |
