The latest vessel to carry the name was launched in 2372 under the command of Captain Picard, several months after the destruction of the previous Enterprise under his command. This sovereign-class ship is smaller than the ship it replaced but is longer and has been designed for different missions and functions. Unlike the Enterprise-D, this vesel does not house many civilians or families and is not equipped with as many comforts. The sovereign-class was designed for defensive purposes and is heavily shielded and armed. The ship is one of the most advanced in Starfleet and comes with the latest technology. Within a year of its shakedown cruise, the Enterprise-E headed to earth to battle the Borg. The ship was also pulled back into the 21st century when the Borg created a temporal distortion in order to assimilate humanity's past. The Borg ship was destroyed by the Enterprise but the Borg beamed aboard the ship undetected and began assimilating the ship and its crew.

The Enterprise went after Data on the B'aku homeworld a few years later after he malfunctioned. The planet was located in a region of space called 'the briar patch' and the ship was not equipped to handle the gaseous and spacial anomalies in the region. The Enterprise found themselves in the middle of a dark and questionable partnership between the Federation and the S'ona who were willing to risk the B'aku in order to obtain eternal youth. The Enterprise, under the command of Riker, battled S'ona warships and defeated them, but only after sustaining severe damage and ejecting the ship's warp core.
