The USS Enterprise NCC-1701 was the first vessel to be commissioned by the UFP. The ship was launched under the command of Captain Robert April in the mid 23rd century. The ship was later commanded by Captain Christopher Pike and Captain James T. Kirk, the man who made the ship so popular. It was during Kirk's 5-year mission on the Enterprise that the ship became well known since it was Kirk and his ship that saved earth on numerous occasions. After Kirk's 5-year mission of exploration ended, the Enterprise was sent back to earth for major refitting in spacedock. For over 14 months the vessel was redesigned inside and out and the ship's systems were upgraded. The ship's upgrade was supervised by the vessel's new CO, Will Decker.
Before the Enterprise was completed its refit, a strange and foreign object entered the sector on a course for earth. Enterprise was readied for launch early and placed under the command of now-Admiral Kirk. Once again Kirk and the Enterprise were successful in their mission. The Enterprise was re-assigned to Captain Spock to be used by trainees and new officers from the Academy. However, Admiral Kirk took command once again when his old adversary Khan Noonian Singh took over the USS Reliant and went after the Genesis Device at Regula One. During the battle with Khan the Enterprise took heavy damage and headed back to spacedock.
To everyone's surprise, the Enterprise was scheduled to be de-commissioned and the crew was to be re-assigned to other posts, including the experimental USS Excelsior. However, Kirk and his senior staff hyjacked the ship and left for the Genesis planet to rescue Spock. When a group of Klingons intercepted the Enterprise at the planet the two engaged in battle. The previously-damaged Enterprise was unable to defend itself for long. Kirk set the self-destruct sequence and beamed his crew down to the planet before a boarding party seized the ship. The Enterprise was destroyed in orbit of the Genesis planet.
